After having moved to the puppy den, Alon was ready for his first lesson. It was taught by Rubia, his and his brother's pupsitter. She taught them the rules of their pack. As they walked around she'd point out the different members and explain their roles in the pack's hierarchy. Alon was quite surprised she was able to remember them all, there were so many wolves in their pack. How could one keep track of them all?
Howling lessons, Alon could hardly take it seriously. He didn't quite see the point of it. Rubia had said it was to communicate with the pack, but if he wanted to talk to someone he would just track them down. He was training to become a hunter after all. Though he did find Fiore's pitiful attempts at howling hilarious. He'd been rolling around, laughing, before Rubia scolded him to practice his own howl.
Due to the mysterious weather patterns that had been happening as of late, Cress decided that all pups should know how to find and recognize healing herbs in case of emergency. Fire had laid out different herbs for them to smell with their eyes closed. "Your nose is your strongest sense when it comes to identifying herbs!" she said. Alon couldn't help but think that the garlic she had laid out masked the other scents.
Seeing as how their mother was a hunter, it was only natural that Elm would be teaching Fiore and Alon the basics of hunting. She sat calmly as she watched their progress in hunting small creatures. Finally getting to do real hunting, Alon wasted no time in tracking down a mouse burrow and started to dig it out. Sadly he underestimated how deep it would be and quickly gave up, wandering off to find other prey.
During the lesson: The lesson today focused on relaying information accurately among pack members. Alon sat with his brother and a few of the younger adults as they whispered the same sentence around the circle and tried to keep it the same, but when it came back to Turmeric it was hilariously different than when it started.
During the lesson: Alon was sure he was the best sniffer there was! No one was able to do it better... But it started to rain, and the scent became much weaker and left him circling in confusion. He grew frustrated and when Fiore tried to give him some help he snapped and bit him. Elm had to take him aside and have a serious talk about how to deal with frustrations. He was eventually allowed to go back to the den and apologized to Fiore.
During the lesson: Today was it, the final test before Alon would move up to the real apprenticeship with a hunting party. Elm told him and Fiore that she had hidden a rabbit carcass somewhere close to the dens. It would be up to them to track it down and 'kill' it, using everything they had been taught. The two worked together and quickly found it hanging from a tree. Alon grabbed onto it and with gravity's help, tore it apart with a shearing technique. He passed with flying colors.

Though he was rather unfriendly as a pup, all the training he did to work with a team made him realize just how much one must rely on others for the pack's survival. As he grew into adolescence he grew less unfriendly towards the other wolves, though still remained fiercely independent.
A complete failure. That's how Alon felt about his first hunt with the Weststar hunting party. They had caught the scent of something big and he had gotten really excited. But as they trailed it, something was off. Another strange and pungent, scent took over the area, and though they tried they couldn't pick up the trail of their intended prey. Elm suggested they return and try their luck later. She nuzzled him and told him they'd try again tomorrow. Alon's mood did not improve when he returned to the den to see Fiore proudly showing off the ear of a doe his hunting party had caught earlier.
Alon's frustration was growing. The party had managed to track down an elk cow but at the last second, Winter had failed to bring it down and it escaped. His mood did not improve when he returned to see the elk bull Fiore's team had taken down. His mother told him to give it time, not all hunts were successful and it was part of his training to understand that. He snapped at her, saying that Fiore didn't have to train that way, his hunts had both been successful. She assured him that they would catch something soon, and that he had already impressed them with his tracking skills.
Finally, the hunting party had finally caught something. Alon strutted back to the den and proudly showed off the antlers of the Blacktail they had caught. Fiore happily admired them and congratulated him.
The good mood Alon had been riding came crashing down. Once again his team had failed to catch as much as a mouse. And on top of that, Fiore's team had brought down a Moose Bull. He wanted to be happy for his brother, he really did. But he was starting to think that maybe he wasn't meant to be a hunter after all. Perhaps he would be better off leaving the pack and live as a lone wolf, maybe join another pack later on.
The hunt had ended badly once again, but he didn't feel so bad about it this time. On the way back he caught a scent and cornered a stoat. It wasn't much food but enough to last him the day. Perhaps he really could survive on his own.
