Halo is the youngest in a dynasty of Fire Masters that have led a large pack for generations. In the cold tundra, it's easy to follow whoever can keep you warm, and for those wolves that don't fall in line so quickly, fire can be used to intimidate, too. Being the youngest in a large family, Halo had no chance of taking a major leadership role short of unspeakable catastrophe, and that suited her. She preferred to hunt, tracking food and monsters in missions that would take her out on the tundra for weeks at a time.
And then the unspeakable catastrophe happened. Some abomination from one of the ancient human strongholds woke up and annihilated most of the Fire Masters, and much of the rest of Halo's pack too. One of her cousins who knew her well and was better at politics took control of the survivors and gave her leave to hunt the monster, which she did. She tracked it south and west, to the remains of a city with a needle-like structure piercing the sky, where the monster nearly killed her. An Air Master named Boreas helped her fend it off and convinced her to make a tactical retreat. They could and would gather a Slayer's Lodge to kill the abomination another day.
