- A disreputable jackal who nevertheless tries to be good, because he gets quite lonely without attention. He's gregarious and a rowdy singer, a hard player but not to be trusted with cubs. Playing with them is one thing; disciplining them is not his thing. He's more interested in whatever he can get them to do for amusement...

- Ex-Skipper, once co-Sunsinger with Sullene and Kipwit's chaser. Returned to Tarwater after a mysterious illness takes Kipwit and Sullene. Believes he's the carrier and that it's for the best to resign himself to these monsters' company.

- Has a bit of a backwoods twang. Possibly a shapeshifter who likes fraternizing with apes...

- Murdered Fellog with Goodie's help. What she doesn't know won't hurt her. Well, it's hard to imagine her any worse than what she is now, but at least only one person died. It's good, right?

Gene approaches Slade and presses his ear tightly into his fur. He mumbles something under his breath before plucking a single hair strand directly from the coat. He turns his back to you and fumbles around with it and a series of objects. After a short period, he offers a small smile. "Despite the current, ahem, difference, Slade is completely clear! Not a carrier for anything at all."
