Choose a Door!

After rushing off with your stolen meal, you feel your pelt rush with heat. You felt bad, as well as flushed with embarrassment. You hadn't meant to grab another wolf's prey, you had only wanted to show the group of younger wolves that you could make your own choices.

You heard pawsteps crunching the fallen leaves somewhere behind you, and fearing it was the wolf whom you had stolen food from, slipped into the jungle. Light on your paws, you kept your tail off the ground and your ears pricked. No one followed you, or so you thought. You heard a rustling in the bushes shortly before a small creature jumped out into your path.

A mouse. You and the mouse had a staring contest for a little while, before it made a sort of chittering noise and flicked its tail like it wanted you to follow. Well, this mouse seemed more intelligent than the rest, so… you followed it. Not wanting to sit idly by for too long, you padded after the tiny animal.

You were led to a group of wolves discussing something. It appeared to be a meeting of some kind.

One was already staring at you as if they had expected your arrival, their three fuchsia eyes boring into you. Another was sitting close by the first, resting comfortably as she turned in a rather casual manner to face you. Her eyes were just as unique as the first, one white and one black. The final was an adolescent with eyes like ice and fur like the blackest black you'd ever seen.

They told you that you mustn't waste time, and that you are needed to retrieve items for one out of the three of them. A bit skeptical at first, you asked what you would get in return. They exchanged cryptic glances, and though your common sense told you not to, your curiosity overpowered your logic and you agreed.

Will you go with the three-eyed seer, their heterochromatic companion, or the strikingly dark adolescent?

(Three-eyed seer)
You choose to follow the three-eyed seer, feeling entranced by their eyes that looked so blank yet at the same time held every secret of the universe. You almost swore you could see stars in them when you squinted your own eyes the right way. They watched you as you approached them, a faint smile on their muzzle.

"Hello, [name]. I am Clair(voyant), but you may call me Clair, or Voyant."
They greeted, bowing their head respectfully. Their ears weren't flat nor pricked, their tail level and their fur smoothed out. You felt more relaxed around them than you felt you should have, and—-… how did they know your name?

Their voice was as soft as the breeze blowing through the clearing, rustling the leaves and dancing with the chirping birds and insects.

"You will be given a riddle. Solve the riddle and find my item, you will be given a reward. Fail to find it, and nothing else will come of this encounter. Are you prepared?"

You nodded, focusing more intently than before.

"I am a call, a shout, and a cry; yet I make no sound. I serve as armor for my knight, my knight who approaches battle as axes shine and winds whip. What am I?"

After they asked if you'd like the riddle repeated, you listened carefully before thinking deeply on the question. You looked around, considering.

A call… a howl? No… a shout… you thought back to the startled noise the wolf who's food you had stolen - and subsequently dropped to chase the mouse - and came to a conclusion. A bark? I am a bark, yet I make no sound. Hm… how was that possible?

Armor, knights, axes, wind… you knew animals like turtles and armadillos had sorts of armor… knights and axes were human concepts, though. You paused, looking up as you put the pieces together. Your eyes landed on a tree. Or, well, the bark. The bark serves as armor for the tree, approaching battle when human lumberjacks come with axes and the wind blows hard. You padded forward to sniff its trunk before reaching your neck up and peeling a strip of bark off between your teeth.

You returned to Clair(voyant) with the item, feeling a rush of pride as she nodded contentedly. She took the item and exchanged it for another, offering you a medicinal balm.

(Heterochromatic companion)
You felt at unease by the first wolf's all-seeing eyes and the third's uncannily dark fur, so you went with heterochromatic wolf. She rose from the ground to pad over to you, touching her nose briefly to yours before introducing herself and explaining her task for you.

"You can call me Chip. Don't be too frightened by Clair, they're as sweet as honey. Shadow's a bit quiet and brooding, but he's a softie too."
She stretched her limbs out as she spoke.
"I've got a riddle for you. Answer it, you get a prize, fail and go on with your life. Simple as that. Ready?"

A bit surprised by her bluntness, you nodded.

"Alright. I murmur but I don't speak, I rush but with no feet, and I lay in my bed but I don't sleep. What am I?"

You feel this riddle should be quite easy as you think about it. It sounds… familiar, like you know the answer but it just isn't coming to you.

You look around slowly, sweeping your gaze over the sights of the jungle before you realize you aren't looking for a sight but listening for a sound. Your ears prick at the sound of trickling water just beyond the border of the jungle.

A river. River's murmur, they rush, and they do have beds. Hah, you knew it would be easy!

Only… how are you going to bring your item back…?

You found you were quick to hope as you realized you had no way of doing so. You snuck closer to the river, then spotted a large shell. That… might work. You picked it up daintily in your teeth, careful not to crack it as you dipped it in the river.

Returning to Chip with your item, she nodded in approval and set the object aside before setting your prize by your paws. A… rabbit's foot? Several, you found. Rather than encouraging you by commenting on their correlation to luck, she only remarked,
"I need to get rid of them. I never understood why everyone wants them, 'cause I sure don't."

(Strikingly dark adolescent)
Too wary to trust the adult wolves eyeing you with odd glances and some kind of secret shared between them, you settled for approaching the dark adolescent. He lay under the shade of a tree, and you wondered if he'd still look as dark in the light.

His icy eyes watched your every move, his expression blank and unreadable. As he spoke, his voice sounded weary, but he seemed quite polite.

"You may call me Shadow."

Fitting, you thought in your head. He paused before continuing.

"I will give you a riddle, of which there will be two outcomes. The first is you solve it, find the item, and I will exchange said item for a prize. The second is you fail to solve the riddle in time, and you return to your earlier path with no positive nor negative results."

You slowly nodded along. Shadow shifted his back legs slightly but didn't stand, glancing off to the side before speaking.

"My riddle for you is this: I walk on four legs in the day, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening. What am I?"

You pause. He spoke the riddle with a sort of tone that would suggest he hadn't simply made it up, likely overheard it from some source. Where could he have? You find yourself wondering, but push the thought aside and focus on the riddle itself.

Four legs in the day, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening. Four, two, three… four, two, three…

You take a few steps, the wintery chill of the frost creeping in causing you to shiver. Snow had not yet coated the jungle's leaves, thankfully, but it was still cold. You shook your pelt out and spotted something in the distance. Against the backdrop of the colorless leaves blanketing the ground, you spotted its pale grey-brown coat almost immediately.

You didn't know what the thing was, just that it looked vaguely human. Snowflakes fell down from above, but you didn't mind them this time. You snuck after the thing as it weaved between trees. Once, it shifted to its hands and knees as if to pull itself along faster, reminding you of a human pup.

A human pup, of which humans started life on four legs. Then, they moved to two, and finally as they grew older, used a fancy stick for balance. Their third 'leg'.

You slowed momentarily as you basked in your realization that you'd solved the riddle, now having lost sight of the furry thing, but finding it had left something behind. A little doll, a toy that smelled of human pups. You brought your item back to Shadow, who smiled faintly.
"Perfect."
He took the item in his jaws, then set it next to him and stood to offer you another object.

"Your prize."
He said, a small sapling between his teeth.

You are traveling alongside your hunter in hopes of getting a small snack for the day. As you both venture through the deep and vast jungle, you mention to your packmate that you are going to stop for a drink and move away from them. As you finish drinking and raise your head, you notice that your surroundings have completely changed. You find yourself in front of three deer, all of which claim that they can help you return to your packmate safe and sound. But who should you trust and go with? It's time to decide.
--------------

Deer 1. - The first deer has a strikingly dark coat, seemingly from a rare condition called melanism. The deer has two large antlers and white swirls of paint on its fur. Despite its odd appearance, the deer showed no sign of hostility and could prove to be a trustworthy friend!

Deer 2. - he second deer is large and muscular, with a coat of deep chestnut and powerful antlers that speak of strength and resilience. It carried a small satchel in its mouth Which only made you wonder what was inside of it. You also noticed that it seemed rather impatient and desperate. Could there be more to the story here?

Deer 3. - The third deer is a majestic stag with a coat the color of the autumn leaves. Its antlers are adorned with vibrant flora, and it carries itself with a sense of wisdom. Its eyes hold a glint of wild determination and a hint of mystery.

so, which deer will you follow?
