XP Rebalance - Make Non-Scout Roles More Rewarding

Posted 2021-01-30 13:38:43

Support support support support. My pack is sick of the ever rotating cast of scouts, please help them.

The first post just puts it perfectly. Herbalists, Pupsitters, Hunters... They're all incredibly important (and each of them difficult for their own reasons) and you want me to believe my scouts... Who aren't even discovering anything anymore, just going to the store to buy a couple of toys, are earning easily quadruple the XP of my hunters? nah man

Fully support. Others have hammered out the details very well. Many of us have/want large packs and it's incredibly difficult to juggle leveling/statting a lot of wolves. I have four hunting parties right now and recently decided to switch old wolves to pupsitting and pop younger ones into hunting just so they get a shot at leveling.

Pupsitting and herbalist roles definitely need boosting, in terms of EXP and, in the case of the former, "activities". Scouts can explore and rescout for items, herbalists grab and make stuff, hunters snag food. With pupsitters, you pop a few drop-down menus and get a bit of reassurance that your pups have a smaller (eventually null if you're on top of things) risk of death. And on top of it being a "boring" role in that sense, they get squat for EXP and only earn it on rollover.

(post mostly removed/edited for being out of date; been a while since I looked at this topic)

I think hunter exp is fine. My pack stays in the taiga/desert (aka, not the most challenging zones) and I can consistently get hunters to level 20 by around 3y6m to 4y6m. (Here's my hunter data - all the wolves in the "second generation hunters" post are lifelong desert/taiga hunters.)

I agree that herbalist exp needs a buff. I try and get all of my wolves to level 20, and it's kind of a bummer that herbalist is such a dead-end job. (My previous herbalist, after a lifetime of hard work, only made it to level 15.)

I'm aware that herbalist is technically the fastest exp gain position in the game if you set up a massive plague cave (buy hundreds of fodder pups, put them in a cave with wolves with communicable diseases, diagnose them for exp, yeet them, rinse and repeat). But this is a highly expensive fringe strat and also I would feel mean for doing it. Since herbalist is a necessary pack position, it should be possible to get to level 20 with "normal" gameplay.

I've seen you on the leaderboards; we're both playing pretty aggressively on the hunter end of things, so I don't know that we're the best barometer for a potentially more fairweather player.

That said, I've lightened my stance a bit on hunter XP. My biggest gripe there, at the moment, is that they seem to have made Challenging biomes practically impassable. The barrier to entry between Taiga/Desert and Tundra/Swamp took me a little by surprise, but that (and softcaps on breeding stats and how that plays into the 'issue') is another topic altogether.

Also this is my first time hearing about the plague cave strategy, that's horrifying LOL

LOL. I have not thought of or heard of a plague cave either.

I feel like pupsitters and herbalists definitely need a change to their experience gains, as realistically no wolf will ever reach max level if they do those jobs their whole lives. I feel like hunters are less of an issue, though definitely frustrating for players that don't focus as much on stats, since more difficult biomes give much better experience- the starter biomes are not going to get a hunting team to max level, but I've been in Taiga for a while now and my team has been able to reach max before they turn 5, so it's definitely doable.

Pupsitting and herbalism desperately needs to give more XP. I enjoy the breeding part most of all, and it sucks that the only wolves who are really worth breeding are my hunters and scouts. The stats are just too low otherwise

I support increasing XP for herbalists and pupsitters, or at least increasing it by biome (harder to hunt in biomes are probably also harder to keep pups safe and gather herbs, right?) but I think XP for hunters is adequately covered by how it scales up per biome and trail. The stat thresholds for, say, hunting large prey in Taiga and getting 500-800 XP per hunt are now reachable with the right wolves, plus getting more stat +1s overall too.
