Allow Ping Response In Giveaway Chat

Posted 2021-12-25 14:57:50 (edited)
I was confused when I saw the "no pings" rule in the news too. I could see the reason being not to clutter the chat, but like, look at the giveaways chat! Maybe it'll take some time to develop, but right now you can see that the posts in there have plenty of time between them, meaning there's plenty of time for some people to come in and ping to claim without cluttering it up.

I don't really hold giveaways but I know I'd feel plenty awkward PM-ing someone about a giveaway. I don't even know what I'd say, giveaways are generally a very impersonal thing so sending a private message feels weird. But in any case, I didn't really bother with giveaways before so I probably won't now either. (I mean, I'll try one to see how it is now. But other than that, probably not)

Support!

Ever since the update I've been too nervous to give away anything after having to let down 6 people... haven't been able to claim anything either because of PMs inducing anxiety. I know I'm not alone in this.

A ping to claim would be much more convienient!

It's so boring in Giveaway thread! It was fun and there were creative giveaways, like riddles, in Main Chat!
I miss that!
I love how giveaways have their very own thread now, and I had hoped they would, but I wish that pinging would be allowed inside!

Edit: also it's so much extra effort to pm the owner,

Hella support this!

As someone who doesn't host giveaways as often as others, and has den space creeping up time and time again from other projects, pinging to claim a giveaway was one of the fastest ways to get rid of a wolf, or an item, that I never really needed.

Having to create a DM, or even a forum, just to host a small cluster of things would want gone seems like a weird oxymoron: take a decent time out of your day to rid of something quick.

And as someone who never really likes starting conversations in DMs with "Hey, how much is this wolf?" or "Is this one up for grabs?" completely scares the shit out of me because topic starters are hellbent, and anxiety is a secondhand issue (not to mention the embarrassment of technically being late to the DM now considering the current state of the Giveaways chat). And as others have stated, inboxes getting full is severely going to dampen how giveaways are done in the first place, considering if a player has a full inbox, there's no means of communication.

TL;DR: Kinda wanting the old-fashioned method back to spare my anxiety and the simplicity of getting rid of things/wolves quickly without the hassle of creating almost another whole paragraph of "May I please have this for free?"

[P]inging to claim a giveaway was one of the fastest ways to get rid of a wolf, or an item, that I never really needed.

Can confirm! I have a giveaway thread for pups that I'm trying to re-home, but sometimes I can bump the thread for a week and not get any responses. So it was very convenient to be able to post in main chat "hey, anyone want this pup?" and have a ton of people see it and get a reply within 10 seconds. Compared to that, the giveaway chat is so sterile and dead. I'd really prefer to just have giveaways in main (the most convenient solution to garner a large audience), but if that's not possible, ping-to-claim at least makes the process easier.

I completely support this 100%!!!! I like to get a ping in chat so that everyone knows someone has already claimed the wolf I want to give away. I don't like the idea of having to respond to multiple DMs telling people the wolf was given to someone else.

I'll share my points regarding this even though most of them have already been mentioned:
  • When somewolf does a giveaway asking to PM, the interested don't know whether the giver has already been messaged. The giver has no way of informing the chat that the asset has already been given within 10-minute cooldown.
  • Most of giveaways that'd require chat response would only given to one user, so along with pings the giveaway topic would take only 2 posts: the giveaway start and the ping without cooldown between these posts. Instead, if the giver wants to inform about giveaway end when pings are forbidden, it also takes 2 posts: the giveaway start and giveaway end from the same user affected by 10-minute cooldown.
  • Giveaway chat currently has 16 hours of history. Imagine PMing somewolf who posted a giveaway 16 hours ago because there's no information whether the giveaway is still valid. Imagine PMing everywolf in giveaway chat.
  • Giveaway is not just "user A offers free stuff, user B talks to user A, user A gives to user B". It's not supposed to be just giving stuff, it's supposed to be fun doing it.
  • Chat is supposed to be dynamic and include any content that tends to be available only for a few minutes, such as giveaway.
We can ping each other when discussing transactions in Sales chat, why can't we do the same thing in any chat when the stuff is given for free? We're allowed to post in Sales chat "offering XYZ for 1 SC" and be responded there but we can't do the same in ANY chat for "offering XYZ for free" like literally:
Sales chat is Giveaway alternative with more lenient rules. It should be the opposite.

You've made a very good point, with the time restriction of posting once every 10 minutes. If pings are allowed in giveaway, then that restriction must be removed so that someone can post a giveaway and respond to a giveaway right after. I understand the likely purpose of this rule is to limit spamming the channel, but we should be able to operate in the same manner as the sales chat, allowing 4 posts of different adds every 10 minutes.

Fully support this!! God the new giveaway chat SUCKS. I'm not giving away wolves anymore because I hate sending dm's and receiving so many!
So so glad I'm not the only one that absolutely hates it.
Really hope the mods take this into consideration, it's so much easier to ping someone and know the wolf is claimed than to be message spammed!
How do we get more people to see this? I have a feeling the mods aren't going to do anything about this, I seriously hope I'm proven wrong.
