☽ Nyx Neri ☾

Another hunter, huh? She tucked that information away with a tiny nod of her head. Nice to have something in common with at least one of them. He, in the few moments Nyx had seen him, seemed nervous and homesick. The young woman carefully slipped into her own feelings for a few seconds, but could only feel that pull to something beyond.

She sat down on the edge of the table, crossing her legs underneath her. At the question, Nyx tilted her head again and tucked an offending strand of silver hair behind her ear.

"Water," she said simply, without any explanation. She placed the leather-bound book in her lap, shuffling the much brighter, newer scraps of paper deeper into the yellowing sheets. A charcoal pencil was stuck in the middle, keeping her place. Green eyes studied him once more. He liked the dragons and was excited by them. Good, or bad? These were dangerous creatures, and they were not to be messed around with. But liking something could perhaps make you less scared of them. Nyx just hoped the wyvern she would be partnered with would be someone she could work with.

She stayed silent, ignoring Kyle, whom she'd seen when they walked in. She remembered Caisin looking down at the ledge, put on his knees, gripping the stone as if something would grab him and pull him down.

"Are you scared of heights?" A blunt, to-the-point question. She looked at his expression for a few moments, then said, "I saw you at the ledge earlier."

Was he cut out for this? How could one become a dragon rider if one was scared of heights? It was like a swimmer who was scared of water. Fear can push you harder, a little voice murmured. As she waited, her fingers messed with the corners of the pages she had stuffed in the book. They were sketches if the charcoal pencil said anything, as well as the smudges on her fingertips and cheek where she had brushed her hair back.

"Well, maybe with a little practice, you might be able to get over your fear."

Caisin

Caisin watched as the girl, Nyx, sat back into a seemingly more comfortable position. He was inwardly kind of glad, starting to get uncomfortable at her stern posture, with her intense eyes boring into him.
He was slightly disappointed when she didnt elaborate on her brief answer. He was about to ask her about her choice before he was caught off guard by her next statement.
"Uh, n-no! I'm not scared of heights!" He stuttered as a flush creeped up his neck, looking away in embarrassment.
Oh crap! She saw that! Did anyone else see? Oh jeez thats embarrassing!
Shuffling on his feet, wringing his hands together again, he stammered
"I'm not really scared of heights, just uh, haha uh scared of falling i guess. Just sorta the drop to certain death you know…" He stated with a weak chuckle as he absentmindedly scratched his head, looking away from her sharp gaze.

Very eager to change the subject from its sudden turn, he asked another question.
"So do you know any of the other students here? I-I came late so i dont know if i missed anything important from the day before." He said, as he took another look around the room and the other students.

❖ Byxem Arros • Neha

Once Neha had tired of playing with her food, she tossed the body of the intruder up in the air once more, before catching him in her mouth and scarfing him down in one gulp. Letting out a triumphant shriek, she whipped her tail and dove down to the infirmary. She was in the mood to hunt again, despite her spirits still being dampened. She needed to get her mind off of... the incident.

Landing with a thump, she let out a huff and began to strut about. She slapped her spiked tail against the ground, leaving deep grooves in the soil. Catching the scent of fresh food being prepared, she stalked into the caverns, dipping her head, and shimmied into the dining hall, before settling herself beside one of the far walls. She watched the students with beady eyes, forked tongue flicking from between her clicking teeth.

Maybe, before she took off with Kyrena (if her sister wished to), she could convince the children to spare a few bites... It would be diminishing to her dignity to beg like a dog for mere scraps, but she was still so hungry, she would give anything to have a couple of bites. She scooted closer to a pair that were talking, letting out a low rumble. She sniffed the girl's head, taking in her scent, before swinging her head around at the boy.

Curious little specimens, she thought to herself, letting out another purr of amusement.

Byxem lay awake in their bed, staring blankly up at the ceiling. They hadn't even taken their boots or their coat off, they had been so eager to get into a comfortable place. But, as expected, nothing did to steel their nerves. Byx closed their eyes, taking in a deep breath through their nose into their belly and holding it for a couple of seconds, before slowly letting it out. "You're going to be alright," they mumbled to themself reassuringly. "You are going to figure this out. You always do."

They took another breath, feeling the heaviness in their chest and stomach ease up a bit. They unclenched their jaw and unfurrowed their brow, muscles releasing that anxiety-ridden tension as they relaxed. "You've got this." Slowly, they slipped into a light slumber, chest rising and falling gently.

Byx had decided it was the wisest choice to keep their door cracked just a bit in case Halvor was sent to wake them up. Dogs can't open doors, after all.

꧁ Ilia Farra || Kyrena ꧂

The sweet dog following after Ilia boofed once, claws click-clacking against the stone ground.

"I suppose Byx has left to sleep... I think we ought to let this burn and come back after..." Ilia muttered, watching the dog sit down in the doorway. "Go along pup, go fetch Byx for dinner!" Ilia called out to the dog, setting the journal and pens back into its holder. Once the pair got back, no doubt they were on the way, Calliope and Ida would have to be sent out again.

Kyrena grumbled and lifted herself from the floor, Ilia shifting to grab onto the spines in front of her. "Thanks for the warning." She grumbled, quickly uncrossing her legs as the wyvern turned to face the small pyre. A beat and then a small stream of flame, hitting the wood before them and immediately beginning to eat away at the pyre, swirling around the small body. Kyrena keened, low and deep in her throat, before she took to moving away. Ilia sighed, watching the flames burn away the pyre. She would do better. This would not happen again, who was she to allow an innocent child to die under her care? Kyrena huffed at the dog and Ilia tightened her grip, suddenly aware that Kyrena had moved back towards the doorway. Halvor whined softly before turning and racing off, skittering through the hallway.

Don't you dare. Ilia scowled through the bond and, of course, the wyvern disregarded her. Two great steps and the muscles beneath the warm scales coiling before a lurch and Kyrena glided through the air. Ilia, with only casual pants to keep her legs safe, cursed the wyvern softly.

The waterfall turned to steam around them, Ilia almost tempted to throw her arms up and throw the spray but the day weighed heavily on her and the woman only permitted a small grin to cross her face as Kyrena roared her thoughts to the cavern. Joy and anger and hunger for revenge, gratefulness for her companions and for the eggs spiralling around each other before the wyvern herself followed the call.

A light tilting of her wings and Kyrena's large talons held fast as she perched on the small platform outside the infirmary and kitchens. "You're so rude." Ilia huffed at the wyvern, taking the chance to get off of her back before Kyrena went anywhere else. Humour radiated through the bond and Ilia ignored her, brushing away the darker marks on her pants from where the heat of Kyrena's body had started to blacken the fabric.

Neha's silver bulk could be seen before them and Kyrena rumbled loudly in greeting but at least waited for Ilia to get into the large dining hall before pushing forward, reaching to greet the other wyvern. The smaller humans underfoot were rather in the way of where she usually went to see if Nikita had any spare bits of food but Ilia would not be happy if she were to crush one. So. Waiting it was.

「」Nikita「」

The roar magnified by the cavern brought Nikita to peek out of the kitchen, watching as Kyrena and Ilia landed. A soft laugh before she moved forward, skirting around a few students and passing by Neha examining another pair before she reached Ilia. "You've gotten your pants all dirty." The house mistress scolded, glancing to watch Kyrena move over to Neha before looking back to Ilia.

"No matter. Come now, talk with the students, food will be done soon enough. Will the pair want to go out hunting?" A raised eyebrow from Ilia followed the addition to Nikita's statement. "I plan on taking them down to the caverns, letting Byx and Neha check on the storm and water eggs before Kyrena and I check on the other clutches. Then they'll have time to do as they please... but somehow I'm sure you've managed to get something prepared for them anyway." Nikita scoffed, batting at Ilia's arm but not giving a reply before she hurried back to the kitchen.

꧁ Ilia Farra ꧂

Another small smile as the woman rushed off and Ilia turned to the students spread around the closest tables. Kyle first. Hopefully Byx would arrive soon enough and the food would be done soon... she'd rather get this done soon, check on the eggs and scatter ashes before retreating to the skies.

☽ Nyx Neri ☾

She smiled lightly at his denial, but it made sense. The falling to death part, anyways. But still, a wyvern wouldn't let its rider fall to certain death, right? Speaking of wyverns...

A shriek echoed in, and a tell-tale woosh as one landed. As Neha walked in, forked tongue flicking between her fangs like a snake, Nyx glanced at the storm wyvern, pausing in her conversation with Caisin. Froze when she walked closer. When Neha sniffed her head, Nyx closed an eye, shifting slightly away from that massive head. "Hey, there, Neha," she murmured. Luckily it was over soon, as Neha swung her head to Caisin.

"I don't know anyone here, either." Green flicked to his, then back to Neha. "Why were you late?" Perhaps he lives (or lived) farther away? She lifted her hand slightly, slowly in front of Neha. Carefully. Like a wild bird. . . she paused to let the wyvern sniff her hand.

Caisin

Caisin saw Nyx's mouth turn upward in an ever so slight smile. Whether about his falling comment or about him being late, he wasn't quite sure.
It didn't worry him any, at least not when a tremor ran through the floor. It was felt, more than heard, but it was clearly the announcement of something rather big just landing right outside.
There were loud clacking, screeching noises approaching the dining hall.
Wait… are the dragons able to come into the dining room? Can they even fit?'
He suddenly worried about the potential for a very large animal trying to squeeze itself inside the small area, and if said animal might just accidentally knock the entire roof down onto them.
No sooner had he finished that line of thought, than a head poked out from the dining hall entrance, followed closely by the massive body.
Oh I guess that answers that question. He wondered, watching the wyvern as it squeezed itself in, and adjusted itself into a comfortable position. There was more than plenty of room to spare, the  room being bigger than he thought, and most likely able to fit several wyverns if need be.
He watched as the dragon swung its head around, gazing at all the students with an intense ferocity in its eyes. It was a mix of dark blue and grey; with elegant white claws and horns. Seeing it this close for the first time, Caisin even noticed some smatterings of gold flecked here and there on it.
This one's Neha right?
He questioned, thinking back to this morning.
Her beauty left him in stunned silence once again, simply admiring it.
The Wyvern then swung her head around toward him and Nyx, taking a sniff at Nyx's hair. He could hear the rumbling deep in Neha's chest with each breath, and could feel the hot air puffing from her nostrils. Nyx recoiled a bit, turning her head away away from the dragons nose as she murmured a greeting. Then Neha turned toward him, her lightning gaze seemingly pinning him in place. In the back of his mind he could hear Nyx saying something. Pulling his thoughts away from the dragon gazing down at him for a minute, he realized he was holding his breath and his chest was starting to ache.
"Uh, I just live in my family's farm. It's a little ways from the town, but you know how parents are. " He chuckled. "I'm their only kid left so there was quite a long time of goodbyes and preparing."
'Yeah, like they'd have let you take one step out that door if they knew where you were really going.' The voice in the back of his head muttered as his smile slowly fell into a sour grimace, but thankfully Nyx was turned away, facing Neha, and probably couldn't see his face anyway.
Looking up at the dragon again, he also slowly raised his hand, alongside Nyx's. Filled with a rather rash boldness, he raised his hand even farther, reaching out to softly touch the dragon gazing down at him.

ϟ Neha

The stormy wyvern let out an affectionate rumble as Kyrena sidled up to her, before sniffing at Nyx's hand. She didn't smell any food, but she licked it regardless, her sandpaper-like tongue grating against Nyx's skin. Mmm... salty. She backed away slightly as Caisin lightly touched her snout, pulling her wings tightly to her body. She wasn't used to anyone other than Byx, Ilia, Raymond, and Nikita touching her.

She resisted the urge to snap at the child, instead settling for a gentle snort and shake of her head, rattling her spikes. Letting out a low rumble that vibrated in her chest, she licked at Caisin's hand as well. Her stomach growled, and she let out a high-pitched whimper, widening her eyes. She lowered herself closer to the ground, her belly scraping the floor, and curled her tail around her hind legs.

How undignified, she thought, glancing up at Kyrena, baring her teeth in an echo of a human grin, but with way too many teeth and a more terrifying curl of her lip.

Feeling more in her dramatic element, she let out a loud whimpering groan, falling to the ground in an attempt to win some sort of pity. She rolled over on her side, bellowing like a sick bull, letting her tongue loll out of her mouth.

❖ Byxem Arros

Halfway between consciousness and their light dreams, Byxem heard gentle scratching on wood and the light tapping of claws. Something jumped on top of them, and they opened their eyes with a huff as a large fluffy body knocked the wind out of them and began to cover Byx's face in kisses.

"Urgh, Halvor," they mumbled groggily, pushing his head away, wiping their face of slobber. "I'm up, I'm up."

Halvor, satisfied he had completed his goal, jumped off the bed and sat, watching his owner curiously. Byx sat up, stretching and yawning, before brushing off the fur from their crinkled coat. "Dinnertime?" Byx asked, sending Halvor into a barking frenzy. They chuckled, patting his head. "Yep, dinnertime. Good job, bud."

The pair began making their way to the dining hall, Halvor running ahead every so often, before coming back and spinning a couple of times as if he was trying to get Byx to go faster.

Their cane clicked as grass switched to stone, and they entered the dining hall. Neha was bothering a couple of the kids ("Caisin and Nyx," they mumbled, mentally running through the list of students), Kyrena by her side, and Ilia going to talk to another one of the students ("Kyle."), Nikita most likely in the kitchens, and the other students spread out across the room.

Separated, alone, they thought, being painfully reminded of themself. They hoped they would learn to get along soon; they would need to learn to work together if any of them hoped to defeat the King. Halvor pressed himself against Byx's leg, bringing them back to reality.

"Good evening, all," Byx said, their voice echoing throughout the room, a slight smile twisting their lips. "I trust I haven't missed dinner?"

{Aybis}

They watched the wyverns come into the room, their heart lifting.
The elegant creatures settled down not too far from them, close enough that, with minimal effort, Aybis could touch them.
Not that I nessacarily want to... they thought. I don't to disturb them. They looked at the wyverns' heads nearly across the room from their tails. One seemed to almost smile.

Aybis looked closer at their physique, the abilty to observe from so close filling them with excitement.
Their backs... They look so perfect for riding. No spikes or jagged bits, I wonder if they were bred like that.

They turned, looking out the window next to them. The night was quickly getting cool, causing their breath to fog the glass slightly.

One of the wyverns- Kyrena?- flicked her tail, which landed on Aybis's boot. They couldn't help but blush at such an occurrence, the light heat of the fire wyvern scales comforting.

➷ Kyle

Kyle's head lifted from his perch on his hand as Neha set foot in the hall, slinking around the long tables, ever so intelligent eyes sweeping over the room. He watched, intrigued, as the elegant dragon investigated a couple of the students. Caisin and Nyx- he'd overheard as they had talked.

A thunderous roar sounded from beyond the walls of the dining hall, likely echoed by the towering walls of the cavern, and Kyle tore his gaze away from the three, eyeing the entrance. He studiously ignored the way his heart had skipped at the sound.. it sounded less urgent anyway, and more like the usual kind of cry he'd begun to get used to in his time here. To be fair, if he was a huge powerful creature with massive lungs, he would roar like that too. Bellow and holler, just to get it out there, just to make noise, feel the rumble.
Well, technically he could do that anyway, but he had a feeling it wouldn't quite have the same.. effect.

Soon Kyrena and Ilia made their way through the entrance, and his gaze fixed on Kyrena she meandered over to the other wyvern, seeming to greet her friend. Kyle's gaze shifted back over to Neha. His head tilted as he watched her, curious at the storm wyvern's antics as she huffed and grumbled, soon flopping to the ground with a dramatic wail. He wondered if he should be worried- was she alright? But truth be told her behavior seemed more.. well, rather familiar.

Kyle scratched his chin, thinking. He glanced down at the remainder of his dinner, sitting sad and forgotten at the bottom of the bowl, then smirked. With a hand he reached in and plucked a chunk of meat- beef probably- from it, using his spoon to scrape off excess broth so it wouldn't drip onto his pants (it did anyway).

With a huff he got up, abandoning his seat to saunter over to the others. He sidled around the students and Neha's body until he was closer to her head, then crouched down, a little bit aways. Kyle was struck by a distant memory. A similar position, kneeling on the ground with half a sandwich in hand, outstretched towards a nervous stray dog and a hopeful expression on his own face. His mother had always gone on about his "bad habit" of feeding all the strays, but he could never say no to those big eyes and those sad little whimpers.

He couldn't remember if he'd been told any rules about "feeding the dragons" but oh well, guess he was about to find out.

"Neha~" Kyle cooed, tentatively reaching out a hand, the chunk of beef sat invitingly in his open palm.

ϟ Neha

The wyvern let out another moan, slapping her tail against the ground, but picked her head up when the scent of food filled her sharp nostrils. She rolled over onto her belly, pushing herself up with her wings, staring hungrily as Kyle crouched near her head, a piece of meat in his hand.

Letting out a rumbling coo, she crawled closer, sniffing furiously and examining the food. Seemingly satisfied that what he was offering her was, in fact, edible, she let out an excited crackle. Raising herself slightly more, she snapped the beef up, tossed it in the air, and swallowed it without even chewing. Neha made a purring sound, shuffling closer to lap at the sauce in Kyle's hand.

She turned her head, narrowing her eyes and letting out a low growl as Halvor bounded up to them, his whole body wriggling at the sight of Neha getting food. She bared her teeth slightly, her spikes raising like a disgruntled cat's, but the dog didn't seem to be too bothered. He was doing happy spins, yapping the entire time, before jumping up on Kyle.

This was too close to Neha for her liking, as she raised herself to her full height and let out a hiss, curling her tail up and flaring her wings out, nearly hitting some of the students. It was her food, not some mutt's!

Go find some other meat, furball! she growled and clicked, and although Halvor couldn't understand what she said, he got the point. He backed away from Neha, scampering to cower behind Nyx's leg, whimpering loudly. Neha let out a snort of satisfaction, resuming licking at Kyle's outstretched hand.

❖ Byxem Arros

Byx stared incredulously, having walked up to the small group of the wyverns and students. They spluttered for a moment in angered disbelief, before throwing their arms up in exasperation. "Neha! What in Draig?!" They shook their head, rubbing their face, before cooing at Halvor, who shuffled over to them, trembling slightly. Neha glanced over at the pair but didn't seem unbothered, as she lifted her shoulders, not unlike a shrug.

"Unfortunately," they said to Nyx and Caisin, scooping Halvor up in their arms with a huff. "You won't always get along with your wyvern." At this, Neha snorted, slapping her tail onto the ground. Byx narrowed their eyes at her. "Neha, if you continue to act like this, I'll have no choice but to put you in the stables for the night," they said sternly, but to no avail. How would they even keep a storm wyvern in a stable? Neha threw her head back, cackling, the sound carrying like thunder. She stomped her feet on the ground.

Byx sighed before leaning over to the students. "I swear, she's just like a toddler," they muttered, rolling their eyes, a smile still twisting their lips.
