I name my wolves names that vaguely mean their fur or eye color that i find on behindthename.com (favorite site for real human names) but i keep seeing these really nice warrior cat-like names like Sunspirit, Shadowbrook and Dawnhill and i want to use those more! but i am not creative enough lol.. how do you come up with yours? is there any generators or lists of good words to use in a name? maybe you have an even cooler way of naming your wolves? please tell me i love stuff like this!
I use Warriors-style naming for my wolves. Usually I just wing it, but there are a couple of generators out there on the net. Here's a decent one... https://www.imagineforest.com/blog/warrior-cats-name-generator/
Most of mine started with names from the two fantasy series I write. Short, simple and unique spelling. As I run out of those I'm mixing in some Hebrew/Middle Eastern language names to match my desert theme. Also have 2 named after movie characters, but that won't be a large number.
I just simply name whatever comes to my mind, even though it sometimes might take a lot of effort to find a name that my pups stay default for quite a while. I sometimes inspire by the parents names, especially from the stud, doing some research regarding the name then trying to relate.
I name my wolves after plant life or herbs — mostly the ladder but I do occasionally name them after trees or flowers! No real pattern as of yet, but eventually I'll likely categorize what plants mean what and what that coincides with.
I also like to use botanicals, but I love using obscure English words usually referring to emotions or abstracts. Nothing too long, but fun to say. I usually try to find something that reflects how they feel to me as an individual, and usually base their designs and decor around it.
My wolves are mostly named for things in/around/about Arizona (places, plants, animals, street names, etc), though I've had a few named after friends (in round about ways) or related to friends' pack themes. I like lineages/family trees, so I try to keep lineage names somewhat based around the same thing (a wolf named after a particular place has a pup who then gets named for a place that is nearby to that, etc). Every once in a while I use a stud's name or the wolf's parents names for inspiration (ie: one time I bought a wolf whose mother was some sort of bird-related name, so I gave the pup a bird-related name of a bird found in Arizona).
Will likely in future years eventually branch out into "whatever pops into my head", since that's sort of what happened to my pride on Lioden (started out as African names, has since become a whole mess of whatever :'D I once had a lioness named Large Magellanic Cloud, haha).
