Duskveng's Lore
Pic taken from: Natural Habitat Adventures
Duskveng.
A name, though it held no meaning or merit to most, meant a place of safety and home for those who lived within its vast reaches.
Nestled into the frigid safety of the taiga, bordering the coniferous forest and tundra, the wolves of Duskveng thrived. With hardy dispositions and a will to survive despite the harsh conditions of their home, Duskveng wolves consider themselves to be tough and spirited. Spring was plentiful with bountiful prey and resources, while winter was bitterly cold and fresh resources were scarce, but it was enough to sustain the large pack.
Countless seasons ago, before the current lead, Duskveng was founded by a young yearling femme named Anika and her dutiful mate, Keanu. The two had been fresh from adolescence, having reached their first, complete cycle of life. They had decided to start a new pack together and moved from their respective homes to the temperate Deciduous Forest. There they spent their lives together, raising litters and expanding their home to help wolves in need of shelter permanently or temporarily. They were soon joined and allied themselves with a neighbouring pack, Naonuma. Anika and Keanu became fast friends with their neighbours.
As the pack grew, and both Anika and Keanu grew older, they bid farewell to most of their pups and packmates. Life continued. As Anika grew into an elder, she decided to leave the Deciduous Forest behind for the mystery of the mountains. Aided by her young protege, Kaolin, an oddly-pelted male who'd been blessed by the moon, she made the long trek to the mountains. There they settled in a small valley where Anika spent her final few moons. Keanu had passed on before her and she'd been awaiting her time to join him. When she reached her eighth cycle, she drew her last breath, and Kaolin arose to claim the throne.
With Kaolin now the second leader of Duskveng, he made changes to the pack that his predecessor had bequeathed to him. They had run into trouble and were struggling. Now that they weren't very close to their allies, they struggled far greater than the pack had ever seen. Wolves were forced to leave due to major food shortages. Distraught, Kaolin worked his tail off to ensure that it never happened again. And he kept that promise. Hunters became more skilled and experienced as generations grew and pups were taught the knowledge of their predecessors. He eventually met Carmine, a beautiful red-furred wolf with whom he was immediately smitten. She became Queen not long after her arrival. Together, they raised many pups, with their final litter being the most precious. Eventually, Kaolin grew older, with time marching ever so faithfully onwards. During his last few moons, Kaolin, much like Anika had before him, moved the pack to the Taiga.
Unlike his predecessor, Kaolin never drew his final breath. A friend, the mysterious Dreamlands cryptid, Tethys, gifted the male with a strange creature. He was then bestowed immortality. A gift that allowed Kaolin to remain suspended in time. Alongside Carmine, the couple became Duskveng's Eternal Guardian, watching over his pack as they settled into their new home, alongside their newly ascended Queen, Taiku.
Upon her succession as Queen, Taiku was unlike any lead the pack had experienced before. She was strong, forward and blunt. But also as gentle as falling snow, eventually earning her title, The Winter Queen. She possessed strange markings, similar to the domestic dogs of the tundra and glaciers. Taiku, despite being a half-breed, proved herself to be worthy and capable of being Duskveng's Queen. She was barely two or three cycles old when Blue Jay entered her life. Though he was as prickly as a thorn bush despite his soft-sounding name, Taiku loved and treasured him. The two did not have many litters together but still loved one another regardless. She also had a long reign of eight years before she drew her final breath. She did not die without an heir to assume her position.
Upon the closure of Taiku's eighth cycle, the moon rose upon Duskveng's fourth lead, Vesper, the Starlit Knight. Throughout his reign, Duskveng prospered. Pups flourished and grew into adults, new and old members departed ways. Life continued as normal. Vesper was the proud King of Duskveng for eight long cycles of the seasons. He grew from a rather impetuous young male to a wizened leader. He was beloved within and beyond the pack for his strength, kindness and the prosperity he brought to Duskveng. He too eventually passed, leaving the pack in the capable paws of Phaedra.
Phaedra was unlike any lead Duskveng had seen before. She arrived before the pack, seeking shelter and a place amongst them. She had foretold that she would become the next Queen, which the pack found preposterous, considering she was blind. A blind wolf couldn't lead the pack! Until they discovered that despite her disability, she possessed a rare and incredible ability. She could walk in dreams! Vesper, intrigued, took the lass on, training her and preparing her for his eventual passing. She remained as courteous, kind and generous throughout her life as when she arrived. She was a peacemaker, able to defend herself and her pack. She strengthened bonds with allies and kept bloodlines strong. Upon her seventh cycle, she walked in the dream of a strange-eyed wolf-like creature. They called themselves Icarus.
Upon the setting of Phaedra's final sun, Icarus, the Changeling King rose to power.
