october 1, 2024.
he was taken into the strange pack as a pup. he couldn't remember much beforehand, other than the faint memory of being carried into a warm den. and then... nothing.
there were so many new scents. he was overwhelmed, hiding in the corner of one of the dens and holding his breath so that the wolves wouldn't find him.
of course, they did. a red wolf - le tao, her name was - found him utterly confused and terrified. she had named him. mao long. it means dragon, y'know. she had said. she was proud of herself. mao long didn't know what to say, so he just mumbled a thank you.
it was the start of his most treasured friendship.

mao long wanted to be a stalker. he had seen xiuying, the pack's current one - she was amazing. she scented things before the other wolves, and was the first part of a successful hunt. mao long wanted that to be him.
xiuying gave him private lessons. he learned how to scent things out, how to be quiet when he moved. mao long learned everything from her, and was eager to become an apprentice so he could finally go on his first real hunt.

mao long finished his last lesson. he had worked hard, and now, xiuying said that he was ready to go on his first hunt after he rested for the rest of the day. he couldn't have been more excited, as was le tao, who he had grown close to in the days that he had been at the pack. she wanted to be a finisher - the one who gets the final bite on the prey. the red wolf was strong. he knew she trained hard, but it still astounded him to see the solid muscle under her thick fur.
mao long didn't look like that, but his job didn't need him to be the strongest. he just needed to be the smart. if mao long didn't find any prey, le tao wouldn't have anything to kill. it was something they always argued and teased each other about, which job was more important. mao long liked making le tao laugh. she was usually pretty stoic - the most serious wolf in the pack, even, yet she'd also shown mao long that she could be silly.
mao long couldn't wait to be hunting alongside her.
