Shadow on the Mountain had challenged his previous pack's leader for authority, feeling that they had been failing to lead fairly and safely. For this insult, the leader did not do the honorable thing in accepting the challenge, but instead rallied the pack with lies against Shadow and chased him from the pack.
More determined than ever, he left on a journey of his own. He meditated on what made a good leader and how his own pack had gone so awry, gotten led so astray. He travels far from the place of his birth until he is met by a strange but friendly wolf named Tala. She tells him about the many territories of this area, and supports him in starting a pack all of his own. Summer's first Snowmelt and Ice of Glacial Peaks join him at the first, and with their support he was able to start fresh. He tries to lead with the honor that his old leader lacks, but he knows he is not a perfect wolf. Ice and Summer are his checks and balances, and he tries to give every wolf a voice, even those who have personalities that clash with his own.
