♤ Evangeline ♤

After a few moments, Evangeline sat up. Her eyes drifted around at the different people. Too bad I'll never know any of them. She thought, before getting distracted by the large creature in the sky. Her eyes widened and she stood up, watching the light slide off the scales of the dragon. Was she really seeing this? It was the most beautiful creature she'd ever seen. The black and red melded together perfectly at their borders, giving the wyvern a look reminiscent of magma.

She held her hands over her heart, her breathing becoming shallow as if she were feeling like she was stealing its air. "Wow..." She breathed out, her mouth left open just the slightest. This encounter only made her more excited to meet the small wyvern that would be bonded to her. Was there a possibility she... wouldnt be alone all the time anymore? That she'd have a companion?

{Aybis}

Their eyes darted around her room, taking in their new, cramped surroundings.

Why did they choose me? they wondered. They were already regretting coming. This place... Well, in all honesty it was fine, but still, it didn't feel right.

They missed the open-ness, the biting winds, the freedom of home. They thought of their family, what did they think of them? Their father, their siblings- were they worried? Were they proud? Had they even remembered that they were leaving?
They looked at the room again, trying to pull themself together.

Aybis looked about the small pile of books by the bed. Though they couldn't read much -they had had no need to learn- they could make out the word 'wyvern' on one of the covers.

They sighed. It doesn't matter how I feel now.
Finally, I will get to see what my entire life has been leading up to.

Caisin

He stood in place, turning in a circle, observing his surroundings in the open courtyard in front of the school. It was much bigger than he expected, but of course it was, needing to house a soon to be flock of dragons. What did you call a flock of dragons anyways? He thought, before shaking his head. Not important right now, stupid. You'll learn about that later.

He had been let in by headmaster Ilia, followed by several apologies for being late, with some nervous stutters and compliments mixed in. Not the best start to his new life here. Caisin huffed. He turned toward the front doors of the dorm, before seeing a brown haired girl sitting down against the far corner of the building outside. He gave a small wave to her, letting out a small nervous titter before looking away, suddenly a little self conscious about his messy and torn clothes. Everyone he had seen so far had been dressed very nicely, or at least had the decency to not be wearing ratty and dirty shirts. He looked away, a little shy now. He started toward the dorms, before realizing that in his anxious stumbling through the gate, he had forgotten to ask headmaster Ilia which dorm was his.

He quickly turned back around again, looking for the teacher, when a noise ahead caught his attention. It sounded almost like leather cracking together followed by a resonating thud. His heart immediately started racing, deep down already having an inkling of what it was, all while his oblivious brain tried to work out what this strange noise was. Slowly…he pivoted on his feet, turning toward his right, now facing the headmaster, and… a dragon slowly descending onto the courtyard. It never landed, simply hovering, watching.

Caisin meanwhile, was having a little bit of a meltdown. His first dragon! He had only every heard stories, maybe seen pictures in history books, but this one was real, living, breathing, right in front of him. He could feel the hot gusts of wind beating against him whenever the dragons wings snapped back and forth. He wanted to run right up to it, to get a closer look but obviously that would be a bad idea. He found himself jumping on the balls of his feet in excitement, probably making a fool of himself, like a giddy child, but he couldn't be bothered to care, too enamored watching the black and red animal. A thousand more thoughts raced through his head. How heavy are they? How big do they get? Do they have magic abilities? How long can it breath fire for? How old is it? And many many more questions and ideas racing in his mind while he watched the dragon in stunned awe.

🎑[ Nyx Nith ]

The answering call of Sage made her sigh, a squint up. Yup. She'd heard that. Slowly, Nyx stood up, slightly extending her right arm out. Sage cried out again, then suddenly tucked her wings in, free-falling. Once she was about fifteen feet above the ground and imminent death, she snapped then open, perfectly slowly down. Pitching her wings back, Sage latched on Nyx's raptor handling forearm guards.

Nyx scowled at her falcon.

"We're not performing; you didn't need to do that." Her voice was a whisper; the first time she'd spoken, and it was to falcon.

Sage simply opened her peak and gave a warbling chirp. If birds could be smug, the peregrine falcon certainly was.

If no one had noticed her before, they certainly would now. A tallish young woman with a seemingly random falcon she'd just whistled up.

Why are you like this, Sage? Always wanting attention. She shook her head. Distracted by her falcon, she hadn't noticed the dragon and the headmaster.

Black and red scales gleamed in the light of the sun. The awe waving off the other students was almost palpable. The good or the bad? It was hard to tell. Nyx could however feel hunter instincts kick in. The stance of the reptile screamed predator. It was like staring down a bear. A huge, hungry one.

She almost took a step back.

No!

Her back straightened, staring down this hunter with a glare of her own. She could not be scared of the ancient beings that would one day be her companion. No. She did not step back but walked silently to where some of the other students were standing.

❖ Byxem Arros

Byxem walked with brisk but long strides, their cane clicking against stone. They were late, late, late. Curse my curiosity, they thought, briefly remembering the small fox they had spotted and silently watched. No time to be looking at fox kits, they had children to look after! The tall figure stooped to avoid a tree branch, and suddenly, they were in the clearing.

They could actually breathe out here. Being out in open areas like this, especially out in nature, always made Byxem feel more at ease. The wind whistled through the grass, birds swooped overhead, and small creatures scurried underfoot. Not to mention, it was so nice and warm. Nothing like the cold back home.

The first thing Byx noticed was a great dragon hovering in the air. It was Kyrena, that showoff. They chuckled to themself. They liked picking fun at Kyrena and Ilia; it was hilarious to see their reactions. But right now wasn't the time to do that. Get it together, Byxem. From where they were standing, they could clearly the students. One, two, three... Weren't there more? Byxem huffed. They were most likely still in their rooms. Although, they couldn't entirely see why they would still be in there; if little Caisin could still be out and about even after arriving so early, why couldn't the others?

Picking up their cane and hanging it over their wrist, they made their way through the grass to Ilia. With the arrival of Kyrena, no doubt Neha would be here soon as well.

Sure enough, as if the thought of her willed her into existence, a large shadow shot overhead. While still walking, Byxem tilted back their head to the sky, shielding their eyes from the bright sun with their unoccupied hand. A glint of gold against a piece of stormy sky, Neha was high above the clouds, diving through them like a dolphin through seafoam. "Must be in a good mood," they said, walking up beside Ilia, a smile playing on their lips. Looking down, they turned their attention to their fellow Headmaster. "Good morning. I trust you slept well?"

☆ Raymond Monet ☆

Raymond finished inking his poem onto a piece of paper, yellowing with age. He liked it better like that, it gave it more of an antique look. He loved poetry, the way it swirled in his brain, begging to be put on paper, to tell the world every story that had ever floated through the cavity of his brain. He smiled to himself, waiting for the words to dry before rolling it up and tying string around it.

He turned his head as he heard the chatter of new students, and a few minutes later he heard the swoop of a dragon and exclamations of awe. He chuckled to himself, shaking his head. He didnt blame them, when he had first seen dragons, he almost melted from awe. "Time to make my way up, I suppose." He said, not bothering to put a shirt on. It was better for them to get used to it now considering he rarely ever wore any.

Raymond started up the hill, getting to the school right as Byx stopped to stand next to Ilia. He made his way over to them, not bothering to greet any of the students. They would get used to the fact he was a man of few words, he refused to pretend to be something he wasnt. He stopped next to the two headmasters, dipping his head in greeting.

{Aybis}

They sped down the path in a panic, desperately rushing to the clearing.
I'm going to be so late... Would they punish me for tardiness?! they shuddered, remembering the strictness of their teachers back home. Home... They both yearned and despised it, yet even that dismal place seemed preferable to peeved, strange teachers.

And the students! What about the students?! Would they be kind, or cruel, or... They had tried to avoid the others upon arrival, but now it'd seem inevitable that they would meet.

Aybis was so focused on this that they neglected to spot a unfortunately postitioned stump, and tumbled face first over it and into the clearing.

They scrambled to their feet in embarrassment. Had anyone else seen their faulter?
It didn't seem so, to their relief. They exhaled, gathering their thoughts, and looked to the sky.

And there it was.
A dragon.

It seemed so... Beautiful. The life etched between the tiny, glimmering scales, the elegance in it's posture and grace in it's movements. It was like nothing they'd ever seen before, far better than any painting or sketch could have described.

And suddenly, this place didn't seem quite so bad.

Ilia Farra/Kyrena

Kyrena settled to the ground, head snaking towards Ilia who reached to give her a small pat, resting her hand there as she turned to Byx with slightly smug grin. No use pretending they didn't enjoy attention. "Ah, apart from the rush early morning I did. I think Kyrena did as well, given how early out she was. How are you holding up? Is Neha well?"

Kyrena had just pulled away, calling out to Neha. Raymond had arrived, giving a small nod of greeting and Ilia smiled in response, looking towards the gathered students but not making a move to address them just yet, rather waiting on Byx's reply.

❖ Byxem Arros

The sound of crunching grass and heavy footsteps caused Byx to glance over their shoulder. They immediately whipped their head back around, however, when they saw it was Raymond. Without a shirt yet again. They cleared their throat and lifted their chin nervously, muttering a good morning to him, before looking away again. They shifted their weight from one foot to the other, readying themself with their cane.

Gods, they hoped they weren't being weird. Them, Byxem Arros, be weird and nervous and flustered? Never. Not in a million years.

As Kyrena landed (finally), Byx couldn't help but smile back at Ilia. "Yes, I heard Caisin got here a bit late," they said, nodding. They sighed, thinking back to their little living quarters, so unlike the home they had grown up in. "I'm doing alright, but I'll have to stave off my coffee cravings if I'm going to make it thought this week. I've only got a couple cups left, and I am not riding all the way back to the village." They chuckled, shaking their head. "Neha's great. Annoying as always, but great. She found herself some bison the other day, not sure if you heard."

A loud crackling sound, like rocks being grated together, came from overhead as Neha swooped down. She was quite obviously a lot younger than Kyrena, being smaller in size. She shook out her spines and stomped forward, butting her rough head against Byxem, nearly knocking them over.

"Ack! Neha, boundaries!"

With a reluctant low crackling, she pulled back, sitting on her haunches. Byxem looked at Ilia with an expression that said "see what I have to deal with?"

{ Ori }

If he was impressed by the winged creatures appearance, it didn't show on his face. Ori had always kept an open mind, not much managed surprised him. He'd seen and read about many things, dragons included. In a way they reminded him of himself. Despite dwindling numbers, the creatures managed to cling onto their place in this world. As far as Ori knew, he was the only one left from his homeland.

His light coloured hair was softly blown by the wind and equally as light eyelashes fluttering as the wind blew in his direction. He'd been one of the first on time and none of the other students present drew his attention or interest. It wasn't in a mean or unimpressed way, he just figured that there were more important matters to focus on. Such as the headmasters that stood before them all.
