⎯⎯ ୨ Nyx Neri ୧ ⎯⎯

She studied the words, though they blurred together in an unreadable mess. She thought she was done with school. The paper was rough beneath her fingers and the pencil in her hand was familiar. Ever so often, tiny doodles appeared on the side of her notes. A red-tailed hawk here, a nightjar there.

Nyx snapped up as one of the students spoke.

"What are you drawing?" It took a small pause before she realized they were talking to Kyle, not herself, and she relaxed slightly. She added the distinctive crest to an ornate hawk-eagle with a few strokes of her pencil and rolled her shoulders back.

Aybis, she thought, tucking that bit of information away. Nyx looked at the rings on their fingers, wondering vaguely if they had any meaning, like the pendant around her neck, hidden from view.

"I think...water," Nyx admitted. Then she added, "I've been having...dreams." There was a light questioning tilt to her voice as if she was confused about that. Something poked at her, telling her to make conversation. In a voice that sounded very much like Corvus it said, Stop being a damned wall a talk a bit, Nyx. "What about you, Aybis?"

➷ Kyle

Kyle could only blink as Caisin spoke, his thoughts spilling into words like an excited, bubbling creek. Kyle opened his mouth to reply, but hesitated, unsure of what to say. He hardly knew the situation himself, it wasn't as if there was much new light he could shine on it. Regardless, his open mouth fell into a pout as Caisin's attention was only fleeting, distracted with introducing himself to Aybis.

Truth be told, he didn't feel particularly different or special now, but once again he had no clue what exactly was supposed to feel different. Ugh, complicated dragon stuff.

Crossing his arms and letting his head fall to rest on them, Kyle intended to sulk for a few minutes- until his attention was recaptured by Aybis's question and he quickly raised his head again. Different types of wyverns, his most prevalent train of thought that day. Water, Nyx had said for herself, and Kyle regarded her curiously. Dreams? Hmm.. He frowned thoughtfully, trying to scrounge up memories of whatever scattered things he had dreamt about last night, but there was nothing solid he could recall.

He wanted to interject with his own theory, but he didn't really have one. Fire is pretty awesome, He thought idly. Kyrena's impressive flames cascading overhead last night came to mind, brilliant and blazing. Or storm, like Neha. He wondered what the two dragons might be up to at the moment. The academy grounds seemed rather quiet at the moment, likely the two were off in the skies somewhere, enjoying the crisp morning air.

With a shrug, he turned to look at Aybis then, brows arched with curiosity.

{Aybis}

They paused for a second.
What would I get along with?

"Maybe... Maybe fire? I mean, back home I used to love tending to the hearth, and my rings are mostly- well, used to be- symbols for fire and firey elements," they said, tilting their hand slightly to let the rings catch the light.
"This is runic for flame, this was ember, this is spark, etc etc."  They pointed to each ring in turn, remembering how happy they'd been to get them as a child.
"This one means dragon. When such things were outlawed, this line was etched in, making it read as fire, but you can still kind of tell if you look close." They fondly brushed the ring, it was by far their favorite.

They felt the eyes of the others on them, making them slightly uncomfortable.

"I wouldn't mind fire," they murmured quietly. Folding their arms they glanced about the small group that'd gathered around Kyle and them. They didn't seem mean, maybe they could even be friends eventually...

Caisin

Caisin pulled himself up farther onto the chair. His knees now resting on the seat, so he could properly lean over to look at the rings. They looked fairly well worn, but beautiful. He didn't recognize any of the words on them though. Are they just really old runes or does Aybis come from a different land with another language? That might explain the accent. Caisin pondered. He leaned over even farther to catch a better look at the one that had the dragon rune on it, piquing his curiosity even more, when he heard Nyx's mention of dreams.
"Dreams?" He asked, popping his head back up to look at her.
"I had a weird dream last night too. I- uh- don't remember too much of it." He lied, when in fact, the dream was still as vivid as when he was in it. None of the details, however small, had faded from his mind unlike any other dream. But mostly, the onslaught of confusing and mixed up feelings still hit him whenever he thought about it, feelings that didn't feel like his own, and he was still trying to work out what they were and what they meant.
"I think i remember snow." He stated, scratching the side of his head with a finger.
"Wait, has anyone else had crazy dreams at all?" He asked, turning his gaze toward both Kyle and Aybis, before giving another quick glance back to make sure Headmaster Ilia's back was still turned; casually wondering when the lesson would end and they could get to more exciting ones. This reminded him of another question to ask, so he once again turned back to the group.
"Oh yeah, and I also heard there were some weapons classes planned too. What kind of weapons do you think they'll be training us with?"

➷ Kyle

Kyle leaned forward to get a closer look at Aybis's rings, a light coo of admiration slipping out as he admired the way the metal glittered in the low light. He almost instinctively reached out to touch one- before catching himself. He settled for pointing at them instead. "Those are so cool," He chimed in. A brief pause, then he smirked, "Hah.. get it? Cool? Y'know, because.. ..nevermind"

Awkwardly coughing into his fist, he merely shrugged at Caisin's query on dreams. "Nothing I can remember," He muttered, picking at a spot on the table where the wood appeared to be splintering a bit. Kyle was pretty certain he /had/ dreamed at least, but when he tried to reach for the memories, they flitted away like a leaf in the wind, leaving behind only a disappointing sense that he was forgetting something. Glancing back up at Caisin, a light smile hovered over Kyle's face. "Snow, huh?" He drawled, "Well, if that ends up meaning anything, I hope you like the cold."

As Caisin shot a glance back over his shoulder, Kyle puffed out a sigh, flipping shut the book he'd picked out from the stack just earlier. He nudged it back on top of the others and ran a light finger down the sides of the other ones, briefly peering at the other titles. He looked back up as Caisin turned back around, pulling his attention back.

Fiery excitement shot through Kyle as the other spoke. Weapons classes! He lurched forward, chair squeaking over the floor as he threw his hands up into fists, as if feigning combat. "I'm really good at fighting," He declared eagerly, playfully punching the air in front of him. He let his hands drop a bit, eyes alight with energy, "Sword-fighting probably, hopefully,"

He sucked in a breath, head tilting thoughtfully. "Back home, we used to have this awesome broadsword above the fireplace. Dusty old thing it was, but still super sharp." He hesitated, then frowned, glancing down at his hands still clenched into fists, "..Don't ask me how I know that. Mother locked it away in the shed and that's the last I ever saw of it." He'd tried to pick the lock before he'd left, thinking a weapon might end up useful out in the wide world. Hadn't been terribly successful, but still, maybe he didn't need to share that part. Tales of theft- even attempted theft- were probably not a good way to make friends. Well, maybe it wasn't theft if it belonged to his own family. But still.

Kyle gave a wistful sigh. "I carved this shitty little dagger, but it's.. not the most useful."

- must be able to write both headmaster's names

Optional: choose a friend's name to write

⎯⎯ ୨ Nyx Neri ୧ ⎯⎯

"Don't believe that, Kyle," she said in quiet tones. "Anything can be used as a weapon with necessity. If you only have a stone in hand against an army, then that can be as deadly as a sword with enough need." Nyx paused. "That's what Corvus told me, anyway." Her voice went strangely. . .strained at the name.

It was almost word-for-word what he had said. She had commented that she wanted to train with an actual weapon and not a bow.

Nyx fidgeted. Please don't ask who he is.

Friend. Mentor. Boss. Father figure. Sacrifice?

"Well, I hope we get trained in all sorts of things. I'm familiar only with my bow." She took in a breath and let out slowly.

Books were exchanged, and she peeked in the pages. Math, how boring. Studying the mess of numbers, she looked up at the table and the group.

"In case you don't know, I'm Nyx. I was a falconer before I came here. My bird is named Sage." As if her name had summoned the falcon, Sage screeched from outside. Obviously, she was upset about being forced to stay there. Nyx shook her head lightly, looking as if she was used to this. She was, honestly. Sage had always been like that. And not just for her. Corvus had said that Sage was possibly the loudest bird he'd ever encountered.

Fire. Ice. Water. Storm. What else is there?

She glanced at her attempts at writing in Tafod y Draig. A flock of birds of prey, no one alike, were drawn across the page. In stages of flight or perched. There was even Flumen, Corvus' red-tailed hawk, hidden among the other hawks. The names of the birds were scribbled next to or under their respectful drawing in small, neat handwriting. Nyx turned the page to a clean sheet, perhaps slightly more embarrassed about the drawings then her face said.

➷ Kyle

Kyle let his hands relax as his arms settled back on the table. "Yeah, I guess you're right," He mused, eyeing Nyx curiously. Corvus?  He could've sworn he'd heard that name before.. recently even? His mouth opened, question burning at the tip of his tongue- though Nyx went on before he could speak and immediately his curiosity was swamped with thoughts of bows and archery. Kyle had little experience with anything of that sort, but his hands itched to give it a try.

Soon, new books were placed in front of the students, full of.. numbers. Kyle resisted the urge to sigh for the millionth time. Growing up, his father had tried his best to knock some sense of math into Kyle's head, but Kyle had always been rather more prolific in the art of "eyeballing it."

Leaning away, he arched into a very satisfying stretch, arms reaching above his head before he sagged back to the table. He wasn't terribly used to sitting stationary for so long. Maybe he'd go for a nice long walk once today's classes had wrapped up. Nyx's voice caught his attention once again and he refocused on the other student, happy for any excuse to avoid the open pages staring indignantly up at him.

"A falconer?" Kyle piped up, "That's pretty cool." Far more interesting than endless, long days baking in the sun as he labored over farmwork he didn't really care about. Hah, he could practically imagine his mother's face at such a thought.. ..damn, he couldn't go two minutes without thinking about his family, huh.

Stiffly pushing away his thoughts, he let his eyes flicker down as Nyx flipped over to a new page of her own paper, catching a glimpse of the writings and such on them. Despite his limited glance, it seemed that Nyx was considerably more adept with a pencil than Kyle was. He looked back to his own papers, suddenly feeling a bit self-conscious over the shaky, jagged handwriting. As if of its own accord, his face pulled down into another deep frown, and he smoothed a hand over his mouth before speaking again.

"How long have you had her? Uh, Sage, I mean,"

Caisin

"Oh man, swords!" Caisin exclaimed in admiration. "I've never held one or anything yet, mostly just seen them from afar when the occasional kings soldier came into town. I cant wait to use one for the first time." He stated, thinking on all the different arrays of weapons he had seen, before commenting. "Corvus sounds like a badass." He chuckled.
"But you use a bow too?" Caisin asked Nyx.
"I have one, its mostly just a training one though, until I learned how to hunt properly. Can't do as much damage as a real one." He stated with a shrug. Maybe the headmasters had some proper ones he could train with.

Turning back around to take a glance at the homework, Caisin gave an inward groan. Of course he had to have the longest name out of everyone..
But at least math might be easier. He already had the basics of math down, so Caisin didn't expect too hard of a time. He was glad his parents had taken the time to teach him, needing at least some math skills for things like buying and selling of food, and knowing how much of each harvest to store away for winters. He decided to try and pay at least a little closer attention to this class, as it was something he was familiar with, partially tuning out the conversation the other students were still having.

⎯⎯ ୨ Nyx Neri ୧ ⎯⎯

The mention of her mentor made her shrug. "I uh. I guess he is."

"I've had Sage for about two years, though she's older than that." A small pause. And an intake of breath from Nyx. "She was taken care of by Corvus, the head falconer, and my..." So many ways to end that. . . . "boss." Weak, but it worked. She fidgeted again, glancing at the book in front of her, wondering when they could get out. "I liked it. Being a falconer, I mean. Performing was something I didn't enjoy, but I liked the mask of freedom the hunting gave."

A mask. Not real freedom, not really. Not when you were watched by nobles you couldn't trust.

Why do we need to know how to use weapons? Are we being forced into a war? One that we don't know the basis of? Most of them, the students, were children ⎯ younger than Nyx. How long will we be waiting? Don't wyverns take a while to grow?

Needing the conversation to go along, she said, "So what were you guys before all of this? If you had a job, anyway."
