Hazelnut joined Rime after meeting Bone while he and the Shards were out hunting. Bone felt so much pity for the desperate she-wolf that he begged Polar to let her stay with their pack. Polar agreed on the condition that Hazelnut join the Shards as a hunter. From that moment on, Bone would ensure that Hazelnut was taken care of while she was part of the pack, eventually becoming mates with her.
Hazelnut is very protective of hers and Bone's pups, as they were born very weak and weren't expected to survive. It got to the point where she decided to continue caring for them even after they had been weaned, rather than leave them in the hands of the pupsitters who had their hands full with the other pups.
