❖ Byxem Arros |:| ϟ Neha

Byxem had gone to bed early last night, and yet, they still seemed to lack the proper amount of sleep. Neha didn't seem to have slept well either. Despite her uppity attitude, Byx knew that she was very worrisome, much like Byxem. Dark bags had formed under Byx's eyes, and their skin was paler than usual. They stood at their open window, staring up at the sky and breathing in the crisp air.

They should've gone with Neha last night and just flown around a bit, but they had been so tired.

Letting out a heavy sigh, they rubbed their face before running their fingers through the hair, turning and leaning against the window frame. Byx was used to getting up early, but today, they'd give anything to be back in their nice warm bed, curled up with Halvor. They had, however, very reluctantly gotten dressed already, selecting a deep blue coat with a white undershirt and mustard trousers.

The dog lifted his head from his paws, as if hearing Byx's thought about him, and tilted his head at his master. Byx smiled, stepping over and scratching his head. "About time you woke up," he mumbled, stifling a yawn with the back of their hand. "Let's get going, yes? Nikita should be awake by now."

Besides, they needed to get ready. An anxious twist in their gut reminded them to grab their papers, and they snatched them from their desk, before closing the door behind them. Halvor gave an excited bark, causing Byx to shush him with a smile on their face. "Not everyone is awake yet, friend," they whispered, rubbing his head again.

They made their way to the dining hall again, still fussing with their papers, their mind wandering to last night. They had never heard of an egg shifting elements... they bit their lip. They had forgotten to ask Ilia about the strange occurrence with Kyle last night. They made a mental note to talk to her about it this morning, preferably away from any of the students. They shivered at the cold wind, pulling their coat closer to their body.

Passing the stables, they heard the gentle nickering of Calliope and Ida's mounts, stirring awake at watching the headmaster and their companion with wide eyes. "Good morning," they said, nodding to the horses, smiling. Poor things must be so tired from traveling all night, they thought, waving to the horses. The closest one let out a snort, and Byx laughed softly.

Byx lifted their head to the sky, sensing Neha swooping down. Landing heavily, she crackled softly, nudging Byx affectionately in greeting, and Halvor cowered slightly, hiding behind Byx's leg. Neha bared her teeth smugly at him, before turning her blue eyes onto her rider.

"Good morning, Neha," Byx said, reaching up to scratch the underside of her chin. She let out a rumbling coo as she tilted her head back, thumping her foot on the ground. Even her tail began to wag, leaving grooves in the soil.

"I hope you're ready because I'm not," they said, chuckling coldly. They let out another sigh, dropping their hand, and Neha let out a concerned rumble, pressing her forehead to Byx's face. They hugged her face, petting the scales on her cheek, standing there in silence for a moment.

It was peaceful.

After a couple of minutes, Neha pulled away with a gentle snort. "Thank you, Neha. Breakfast?" they said, and the wyvern let out an overjoyed crackle, jumping to the side to let Byx pass. They laughed and shook their head, before resuming their journey to the dining hall.

「」Nikita「」

At seven, Nikita knocked on the door once again, calling out a good morning as she let herself inside. Hmm. She'd have to try get Ilia to arrange those travellers to dock... maybe the students would be able to go choose clothes. Otherwise, the village. Later she'd bring it up.

Not seeing anyone in the main area, Nikita went up the stairs, knocking on each door and calling a soft good morning as to not startle anyone. "Breakfast soon loves, you have about an hour before classes start!"

═══ *.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.* ═══

꧁ Ilia Farra || Kyrena ꧂

Very unlike sweet Nikita, Kyrena was much ruder in her awakening of those in the valley. A decently sized elk was clutched her talons, following Neha's example of bringing back food as a gift but this was more for herself than for Nikita to cook. The wyvern
circled around the valley, perching on one of the lower rings with a proud roar, clawed wings digging into the stone.

Ilia, far below sitting at the desk in her room, peeked through the window at Kyrena's proud arrival. Apparently it was time to get up properly.

Minutes later Ilia was dressed somewhat decently. Her mother's words ringing in her ears, reminders to dress as befitting of her station. As always, Ilia wanted to laugh. Imagine that. Wearing... frilly dresses and foolish pinafores. Dark pants, cinched at the waist and ankle with decent boots. A simple top, white, with slightly wider sleeves and a somewhat decorated collar. The fold where the buttons lay was carefully embroidered as well and after tucking the top into her pants, Ilia figured she best fill a small bag with various books and pens, use a simpler belt to keep her pants in place and hold some of her more simple daggers as well.

Good enough.

Setting the books full of ink aside, out of the sun, Ilia left her room and headed for the dorms. Nikita was already there and she figured that it'd be a better idea to go and greet the students instead of waiting in the dining hall instead. After all, she had to check on everyone. See who wanted to leave. A small tray was sitting on the closest chair, four glass containers on it. A silver liquid swirled within, shifting as Ilia picked it up. She sighed, picking one up and checking over it before setting it down again.

Time to see the students.

➷ Kyle

His mind raced.

Kyle stared blankly at the ceiling, eyes still bleary with sleep. He'd been given a few moments of blissful ignorance before the events of the day prior came flooding back to him, wreaking havoc on the quiet of his morning.

Thankfully he'd fallen asleep rather easily last night- he had worried he'd toss and turn with all that there was to process, but it seemed his mind had finally had enough, instead welcoming the peaceful void of sleep. His dreams had been quick and fleeting, already running from his memory as he breathed in the cool air.

But... It attached itself to you. That's what Headmaster Ilia had said. To me. To me?  His hand slipped up to rest on his forehead, palm warm from where it had been tucked under his side beneath the blankets. To him.
He hadn't really known what to say, under the falling night when Ilia had broken the news to him. Maybe he'd stammered something, dumbstruck and awkward, mouth hung open. Kyle had only been able to nod then, as the Headmaster had finished speaking and sent him to bed. He'd wondered when it would finally come crashing down, brain catching up with the world as Ilia's words registered.

"..Holy shit," Kyle whispered, breaking the silence.

Not in a bad way- definitely not. Though.. to be honest, he wasn't sure what he was feeling, precisely. Yes, there was a storm of something swirling under his skin, crackling and sizzling until he started to shift with a sharp restlessness. He felt a certain apprehension as he prodded at the whirlwind, attempting to decipher it. Excitement. That one made sense. Relief. He supposed that one made sense too. ...Fear ..less sense. This is what he'd wanted, right? Deep down- well actually, not that deep. Just sitting at the corner of his mind, despite his reluctance to look at it and admit the sour feeling of jealousy to himself. So, what was there to be scared of?

Literally everything.

His eyes squeezed shut and he groaned softly. Throwing off the covers, he swung his legs over the edge of the bed, scratching his head through his mess of hair. Might as well get the day started. He knew what his answer for Ilia would be at least, that much felt clear. He most definitely wasn't going anywhere- especially now.

Kyle, a dragon rider.

..Eventually.

--

The breeze held a chill to it, and Kyle shivered as he stepped outside, rubbing his arm through his sleeve. It wasn't the most insulated wear he owned, but he figured just moving around plenty would be enough to warm his bones against the crisp air.

Casting a glance around the academy grounds, he suddenly felt unsure of what his objective should be this morning. In days past he would usually seek out Raymond- if the man hadn't found him first- or stop by the dining hall to lend Nikita a hand with whatever after scarfing down a quick breakfast. If he was to be a student however, he figured his daily routine would be due a pretty significant change.

He gave his stomach a small pat- he wasn't really hungry, yet at least. Maybe for now, he would just appreciate the momentary solitude and go for a small walk. Clear his mind. Well, or the opposite, and do more.. thinking. Him, bonded to a dragon.

Kyle stuffed his hands into his pockets, gaze tilting towards the sky as rays of sun spilled over it, illuminating the clouds in a gently beautiful display of color. He found himself wandering closer to the Cavern and paused, frowning. He peered across the grass towards its grand entrance, a curious thought arising. If he was truly bonded to one of the unhatched wyverns.. could he.. feel it? What would it even feel like? His brows furrowed further as he squinted, staring down the darkness as if waiting for something. Huh.

{Aybis}

They opened the dorm door, watching Nikita go to another student's room. The halls still felt cramped to them, but in the light they weren't too bad.

They quietly moved downstairs. They took a second to admire the architecture that had gone unnoticed the day before.
They stretched, they hadn't gotten much sleep, not that it was an unusual occurrence.
With a final glance behind them, they exited the dorm.

-

The morning air was crisp, and sharp in Aybis's lungs.
They saw a figure not too far from them, the stablehand? He was gazing at the caverns, seemingly lost in thought.
Should I introduce myself? Would they be upset I interrupted their thought? Aybis concluded that the best thing would be to acknowledge him, if he wanted to interact it'd be on his terms.

They waved, catching the other person's attention ever so slightly, before moving about the courtyard area.
Suddenly they looked up at the headmaster, just now seeing the older woman watching them. She asked something about leaving. Aybis simply shook their head. They had no desire to leave this place, not yet. Accidents happen, and leaving seemed far more dangerous then staying put.

They continued inspecting the different aspects of the area. No harm in a little exploration...

Caisin

Caisin sat in the lower level of the dorms, in the small kitchen area. Exploring it this morning revealed that it was only filled with the basics, enough food for rudimentary meals, snacks and drinks. He figured as much, that all the main meals would be served in the dining hall. He had found some tea leaves though, and gotten hot water; enough for now. Caisin had woken up early, and had been too restless to go back to bed, or even stay cooped up in his room. Always having things to do outside, and growing up in a small house, he found he didn't care for small spaces. Sitting at a small table in the corner, he heard the same lady from yesterday come knocking on all the doors again. She peeked her head inside the room he was tucked away in, but only briefly and he didn't think she saw him. Letting her make her way upstairs to wake the others, slowly sipping on the steeping tea, he thought back to last night- particularly his dream.

He was in the middle of an intense blizzard, the trees so lost in the blinding white, they were no more than shadowy skeletons surrounding him. He couldn't tell what time of day it was, couldn't even see more than a few feet in front of him. The freezing wind lashing and tearing at his cloak, his hand raised to block the snowflakes blowing furiously against his face. His eyes stinging from the snow, the harsh breeze constantly pulling and tugging at him, threatening to pull him down. Yet oddly, he was at ease… Maybe because he knew it was just a dream, or he didn't care. That's when the wind died down. The sharp wailing and whistling of the wind slowing to a gentle flutter. He stood up straighter, brushing off his black cloak from all the clinging snow. (Where did he even get that?) the calming storm gave him an opportunity to look around now. The landscape so drastically changed from the intense snow was mesmerizing to watch. The snowflakes still fell gracefully, the cold, gentle wind making the snow jump and dance in so many different ways. The trees trunks coated in snow, their limbs covered in icicles, glittering and tinkling, making them look alive. The wind still blew, and the snow still fell but the cold didnt seem to bother him here, instead he felt comforted, relaxed. He took a tentative step forward, wanting to explore this new land further. The shining, sparkling snow crunched under his feet, but he only made it a few steps when a thundering boom shook the ground, sending him to his knees. Still untouched with rational emotion in this dreamworld, only his curiosity at finding the sound was sparked. Still on his knees, he could feel many more smaller tremors coursing through the earth. footsteps? He wondered. Peering at the blanket of white in front of him, squinting to make out details, he saw a grey shadow detach itself. At first it was a grey mass with no distinguishable features, but as it came closer, the tremors grew stronger, the grey grew darker, and the thing got bigger. The snow seemed to still, the once dancing snowflakes no longer worrying about their swirls and giddies, falling quietly to the ground. The grey shadow in front of him stopped moving, and instead seemed to be looking at him. A single intense blue eye clearing from the fog, evaluating him with calculated intelligence. Several thoughts that didn't seem like his own, running through his mind. Fear, anger, confusion, Hurt? Caisin had started up onto his feet, thats when the shadow suddenly threw its head back, opening its jaw and letting out a loud screech. He gripped his head in pain as he fell to the ground again, crouching down. The scream felt like it was stabbing him in the ears, the branches shaking, the disturbed snow falling, Caisin gritting his teeth in pain, and he wondered if it would ever stop. And it did.

He opened his eyes to look down into the mug he was drinking. The memory so vivid, he had been reliving it in its smallest detail. It left him more confused than anything. Yet another thing to try and figure out. He almost felt sad thinking about it. a weird emotion to a dream like that. He thought as he watched the small leaves in his drink swirling around in circles. That's when he looked up as he heard the door open. Someone was coming in.

❖ Byxem Arros

Byxem entered the dining hall, surprised to see that not everyone had arrived yet. They hummed thoughtfully to themself. They are just children, after all, they reasoned. They'd have to ask Nikita to be a bit more... stern when waking the students up. After all, they didn't have enough time to dawdle.

"Good morning, Madam Nikita!" Byx called loudly to the homely lady. "Did you sleep well?" They sat down at a table near the kitchen doors, facing the dining hall entrance. They couldn't help but drool at the delicious scents wafting into the room, and their stomach rumbled loudly. Byx gave a grimacing smile.

"Happen to have any coffee brewed yet? Or would you like me to do it?"

Having Byx do it probably wouldn't be a very good idea, seeing as how they always seemed to burn the beans. How did they manage to burn the beans? Who knows. They smiled at Neha's retreating figure, clicking their tongue. "Well, there she goes. Most likely off to bug Kyrena, I bet."

They stifled a yawn. Maybe if they ate quickly, they could go for a quick flight before classes began...

ϟ Neha

As Neha peered around the dining hall, she snorted, upset that Kyrena was nowhere to be seen. Letting out a rumble and nuzzling Byx's shoulder, she turned and lumbered out of the dining hall, raising her head to breathe in the scents around her. Where could Kyrena possibly be?

She growled quietly, swiveling her head around like a meerkat, squinting her eyes to scan her surroundings. Two students, close to one another. The others were probably asleep, no doubt. She bared her fangs in a mischievous grin, getting a wicked idea. She flared her wings out, took a couple of steps forward, and stretched her neck up as far as she could, curling her tail slightly and standing on the tips of her talons.

She paused, taking a deep breath, before snapping her wings together twice, the sound resounding through the valley, and then slapping them against her chest as she let out a thunderous roar. As she pounded her wings against her chest, the sound buffeting like the wind and rain of a hurricane slamming against the cliffs.

It was terrifying to anyone that wasn't used to it, and no doubt would not only let Kyrena know that she was awake but would also wake up those lazy bone children.

「」Nikita「」

At Byx's overly polite call Nikita chuckled, raising her voice to call back. "Well enough! Did you manage to sleep at all, hmm? And yes, yes, the coffee is just there by the door!" She gestured in the general direction at the door between the hall and kitchen. A few tables lined both sides, usually full with cutlery and the like, but with so few students Nikita had already set up the table Byx had luckily chosen to sit down. Six for headmasters and students, two extra for herself and Raymond - afterall, Kyle was a student now! - and then Ida and Calliope had their own table. The pair didn't always arrive with the rest.

Soon enough, a small bell rung and Nikita reached into one of the 'ovens' to pull a plate of lightly toasted bread out. Soup from last night as well, ladled into bowls, and then a few glasses for water or coffee.Water pitchers, along with plates and cutlery, had already been set along the table for when they would show up but the warm food would be kept away.

"Have a plan for the day yet? Whaddya think, history and just some basic reading and maths?" Nikita questioned, a soft grimace creasing her face at the thought of all the... words and numbers printed onto the page. She could read. Mostly. But she'd had no need for math, all her recipes were passed down or experimented on by herself. No need for numbers there.

꧁ Kyrena ꧂

The thunderous roar followed by the pounding of wings against a scaled body pulled Kyrena's attention away from the elk she had been ripping apart to eat. It didn't stop immediately and the fire wyvern let out a snarling roar, taking to the skies.

Her sister-wyvern, of course, was the cause of the disruption. Swinging her talons forward, Kyrena sailed down and sent a harsh swipe at the other's face, careful not to actually clip the storm wyvern. Pulling away from the dorms, trying not to slam into them, she roared a playful challenge at Neha, dark wings beating at the air to hold her aloft.

Ilia's slight amusement, slight worry apparently for the kids being woken, pushed at Kyrena who sent a gleeful, playful shove back at her bonded. Exasperation before nothing, gone back to whatever she was doing. Kyrena rattled her spines letting out another roar as she wheeled away, circling above the valley.

♤ Evangeline ♤

The woman woke up slowly, stretching her arms. She laid in bed for about 20 more minutes, thinking over the events of last night. She was still angry about the student, but less so at the headmasters, and more at the person that killed the poor kid. She took a deep breath, getting up to go about her day. She slid her leather pants, blouse, and corset on before exiting her room at the sound of Nikita waking everyone up. Evangeline walked down the stairs, opening the door to the dorm kitchen. She felt her heart almost jump out of her chest as she noticed there was someone in the kitchen already, "Oh- Gods, I'm sorry I didn't know anyone was in here." She apologized, edging her way into the room.

She moved around the kitchen slowly, careful to stay out of Caisin's way as well as out of his reach. She stayed silent as she made her coffee, trying force herself to feel as though he wasn't watching her. Unfortunately, even if he wasn't, all of her fight or flight senses were going off. She stayed tense as she moved, eventually settling down in a chair across the room to drink the rejuvenating drink. At home, she was never allowed to drink coffee because it 'cost too much to be wasted on a worthless little kid'. It was so good, the bitter taste dancing across her tongue along with the sugar and cream created a symphony of flavors. She knew she'd be addicted to this stuff for a long while yet.

Caisin

It was Evangeline that walked in. That was her name right? Caisin had heard it mentioned yesterday, but he had yet to talk to her still. He watched her go about her business in the kitchen, eying her out of the corner of his eye. Her movements seemed jerky and stiff as she made her drink.
Was she nervous? Upset about something perhaps? Or is she always like this? He shrugged mentally, he wasn't exactly in a pleasant mood either this morning.
With a brisk pace, she quickly sat down in the corner of the kitchen; Caisin in turn, returned to focusing on his own drink. Reaching over the counter to top it off with more hot water and tea leaves.

They stayed in silence for a little while, each quietly sipping on their own drinks, before Caisin returned his attention to her.
Maybe shes just uncomfortable being near strangers. He figured.
Noticing she seemed a little more at ease with her drink, he cleared his throat before shifting on the stool, turning toward her direction slightly.
"So, your Evangeline right? Hi, I'm Caisin." He stated simply.
Probably not the best way to start a conversation, he thought to himself but his mind was still elsewhere that morning, and it seemed like a simple and quick way to start up small talk.

➷ Kyle

A flash of movement from the corner of his eye caught Kyle's attention, pulling him away from the vast cavern opening. His head swiveled around to look, gaze landing on one of the students- one of his fellow students, his heart skipped at the fleeting thought- waving at him. He lifted his hand to the air in response, curiosity sparking. Kyle had yet to properly meet this one. They seemed the quiet sort, from what he recalled of yesterday's activities. Maybe he should introduce himself? Especially now, if he was going to be a proper student at the academy it would probably benefit him to get to know his new peers. Maybe he could ask them about.. their own bonds.

He made to move towards the other student, when a booming CLAP reverberated through the valley, twice before a magnificent roar followed suit, like thunder rolling out amidst a storm. Though he'd loathe to admit it, the sound startled him so bad he jumped nearly a foot into the air, whirling around to see the source of the noise. It was Neha, of course. Kyle stared at her, then tore his gaze away to look up as an answering roar and a whoosh of air signaled Kyrena's arrival.

Ah right, just the dragons being, well, dragons. Kyle couldn't help but let out a breathy laugh, smoothing down his tunic as a rush of embarrassment reddened his face. He cleared his throat, glancing around the area again. He caught a glimpse of Headmaster Ilia at the dorm's entrance, likely there to greet the students on the new day. And, he supposed, offer any of them an out if they wanted to leave. Kyle started towards her- he still needed to confirm that he was staying, now was probably as good a time as any. Then he would have to gather his- admittedly meager- belongings to officially move into the dorms before the end of the day.

The student from earlier, who had waved to him, seemed to be exploring the academy grounds. Kyle decided he would likely have a chance to introduce himself in class, if not earlier. Hadn't Ilia said those were starting today? He puffed out a breath, mind suddenly flooded with scattered thoughts on what they might consist of. Hopefully not too much… reading. Well.. he'd worry about that when it came to it.
