⎯⎯ ୨ Nyx Neri ୧ ⎯⎯

The night had not been uneventful for her. In the middle of the night, she awakened from a nightmare of slowly falling through purple-blue water. It smelled and tasted like salt, and she was weightless and unafraid. The light was calm and soothing. Nightmare. Perhaps it was a dream, instead. She remembered the bracers around her forearms. They were carved like feathers instead of as they were now.

She paused in buckling the bracers to her arms. She squinted in the bright light filtering in through the window.

When Nikita knocked on her door she hadn't been asleep. The same words circled around her mind like circling hawks. Especially one string.

Corvus arranged it.

He was going to get himself killed. Looking at her face in the mirror on the dresser, she saw her face flicker in fear. For him. She forced it away.

Nyx ran her fingers through her raven-colored hair as she walked down the stairs. She paused upon seeing Ilia almost at the door. She gave a little nod in greeting. There was a long pause as Nyx held Ilia's gaze.

"I'm staying," was all she said before she slipped out. After a few seconds, she saw Kyle right outside. Her face carried a flush from the wind, and her hair ruffled free of her hands.

What's he doing here?

"...good morning, Kyle."

❖ Byxem Arros

Byxem laughed bashfully, standing up to make their way to the coffee. Sweet, delicious, nectar of the gods. They could hardly wait to taste that horrible but wonderful bitterness.

"I, er, did not, unfortunately," they said with a smile, leaning against the table, cupping their coffee in both hands, and taking an occasional sip. They shrugged slightly, staring down into the swirling darkness of the liquid, reminding them fondly of the clouds right before a great storm. "You know I don't sleep well, and it didn't help that Neha was awake as well." They took a deeper sip of their drink, smiling at the reassuring bitterness of it as they took their seat once more, watching Nikita hurry into the kitchen once more. When she returned, she brought the mouth-watering scent of toasted bread. Their stomach whined in protest.

Byx sighed heavily, leaning on the table with their elbows, running a hand through their hair. "Yes, something simple to get them started," they said hesitantly. They were thinking of immediately quizzing them on their knowledge of what they knew of what was going on and what they were getting in. Byx gulped and nervously chuckled, tapping their long fingers on the table.

ϟ Neha

The storm wyvern crackled joyfully in response to the sound of Kyrena's roar, staring up happily as her fiery companion swooped toward her. She let out an undignified squawk as Kyrena swiped at her snout, and Neha let out a playful roar, snapping at the retreating talons. She lowered herself to the ground, wiggled her haunches, and pushed off the ground with a mighty beat of her wings and a thundering roar. She curved upwards towards Kyrena, angling her wings to rise behind her.

As Kyrena wheeled around and soared away, Neha screamed joyfully, swooping after her. With little effort, she beat her massive wings and swiftly caught up to the fire wyvern. Grinning smugly, she rose up and over her companion, folding her wings as she rolled to the other side. She whipped her tail, sending a resounding crack through the air, and she screeched again.

A challenge to a race.

She roared, dropping her jaw and smiling in glee, much like an over-excited dog. She almost always won, but she loved the challenge and the thrill of the race. The rising and the diving, the free-falling and rolling as she dodged obstacles and soared through the sky filled her with such unbridled joy. Byx would love to be here right now, she thought to herself, feeling slightly guilty, before shoving it away.

If you want, I could give you a head-start, she crackled jokingly over the whistling wind, clipping Kyrena's wingtip with her own.

➷ Kyle

Kyle slowed as he drew nearer to the dorms, coming to a halt as another individual stepped outside. He recognized Nyx, recalling one of the conversations he'd overheard last night at dinner. As well, he recalled her rather abrupt exit after the news of the dead student- although thankfully she didn't seem in any hurry to take her leave of the academy itself.

..Hmm. The dead student.. ..the student who's dragon was now.. bonded to Kyle instead. An uncomfortable something coiled in him at this sudden realization, settling unpleasantly in his empty stomach. He swallowed thickly and tried to push it aside, focusing his mind on the present again, on Nyx, who eyed him with an unreadable look in her eye. Not that any of her other looks had been particularly, er, readable. At least to Kyle.

Well, anyway- "Good morning!" He chirped in response, drawing out the 'o' in 'good' as he flashed a brilliant smile. Probably too brilliant for the early hour, but thinking over all he had, he already felt far too awake this morning. His heart had pattered with a sort of excited nerve since the moment his eyes had snapped open in bed, quickening anytime his new reality really started to sink in.
One hand came to perch on his hip, the other pointing at Nyx curiously. "Nyx, wasn't it? The, uh, one with the bird?" He stuck out his hand to shake, "Nice to meet you- officially, at least."

Kyle frowned suddenly, a new thought springing to mind. Nyx was a student of course, she had been called here, as had the rest of the students, for her bond with one of the unhatched wyverns. He sucked in a quick breath, holding it for a moment before speaking, "Say.. can I ask you something?"

꧁ Ilia Farra || Kyrena ꧂

Kyrena watched the younger wyvern play in the sky, rolling over above her body. The challenge of a race echoed through the sky and Neha clipped her wing with a snarky crackle.

The fire wyvern sent a blast of flame at Neha's face, a gleeful roar of acceptance and a call to race to the waterfall start before she spun away, arcing up into the sky and turning towards the rings.

Now flying against the wind, her wings dipped and shuddered at the speed, tilting from side to side to catch the currents that helped keep her aloft. Neha was fast, the race would almost certainly be won by her, but Kyrena wasn't bothered. Afterall, she almost always won in the playfights. That always worried Ilia, concern for wounds being opened or reopened but she wouldn't stop them. Couldn't, truly.

Warmth building in her chest disrupted Kyrena's wandering mind and a stream of fire glared into the sky, into the mist and fog surrounding the tops of the mountains, before she dived through it.

Fog swallowed the wyvern, leaving only a dark imprint in the mist as she made her way towards the top of the mountain. This, the unknown area before her, dark shapes rising before the wyvern, bursting from the cover and into the open sky.... that had to be her favourite part of being airborne.

Part of a mountain loomed up ahead and Kyrena gave a low screech, a rising sound accompanied by a harsh smack of wings and talons scraping against rock as she just escaped around the side.

Far below, Ilia nodded in silent approval as one by one the group decided they would stay. Soon enough, she had called for the few students outside to join them.

Nikita had already started serving food and Ilia joined Byx at the table, the students choosing their own places around the table.

༺ Ida ༻

@Aybis <3

Someone was walking around outside, quiet and hesitant steps. Ida glanced around the door to the barn, bow clutched in one hand. She'd just returned from scouting around the area, looking for any unsavoury people before Ilia wanted to talk with them.

But it was just a student. She sighed almost silently and set the bow aside, picking up the saddle once more to move it back onto the racks made to store equipment. The student pushed at the door, apparently exploring, and their gaze flitted over the pale Northerner half shadowed. The barn was warm and light, large windows and doors open, but after everything, Ida was one to keep towards the darker patches.

"Shouldn't you be in the hall? Or in the dorms?" She asked, stepping back to Aesira to slide the bit out of her mouth and halter off of her face. "As far as I know, students shouldn't be lurking around school grounds without someone having at least a vague idea of where they are. Kyrena and Neha get snappish sometimes." Ida added on, voice monotone without a hint of whether she was joking or otherwise. A useful skill, learned in the cold palace of her own home.

{Aybis}

They felt a chill of shock and embarrassment.
I didn't think anyone was in here- they thought, cheeks flushed as they squinted to make out the shadowy figure.

"Oh- I- urm, I think Headmaster Ilia doesn't mind too much, they saw me out here earlier- but if you'd rather me go- I just wanted to see the horses." They sputtered out, hesitantly stepping into the barn. It was easier to see once they stepped out of the morning sun.

The other person seemed ... Not nessacarily friendly, but definitely not hostile. Maybe they'd be okay with Aybis just glancing around for a smidge before going to breakfast?

The mare from the previous night pawed at her stall door again. It seemed calmer now, letting out an exasperated snort.

Aybis looked up at the person again, flashing a lopsided, hopefully innocent enough smile. Maybe they could be friends...?

༺ Ida ༻

@Aybis <3

Ida smiled faintly, pushing away Aesira's head as she snorted and went to rub her face against Ida's torso. "I think best come back later. Say hello to the mare but the group is already starting to move." She looked to the dorms, where a few students were starting to file out of.

"But I suppose Il... Headmaster Ilia won't mind if you come in a touch late, as long as you're with me." The spy shrugged lightly and moved away from her own mare, stepping across to Dragonfly. Calliope hadn't come into the stable just yet, his water was still from last night and the food they'd left out was now completely gone.

Picking up a small bale of hay, she moved it over to the stall, unlatching the gate and stepping inside. "Did you use to have or be around horses? Where you a shepherd, perhaps?" She questioned. The distinctive sheep smell had faded with travel but the slight stoop of their shoulders, the clothes they wore... their nervousness around just one person. It certainly seemed like a good possibility.

⎯⎯ ୨ Nyx Neri ୧ ⎯⎯

Is that seriously the only thing people think? The one with the bird?

She shakes Kyle's hand after a slight pause, though it was unnatural for her. She crossed her arms against the wind and nodded.

"Yes, that's me. And her name is Sage."

Sage herself was out hunting, though it would be a wonder if she actually found anything. Nyx brought her hands up to quickly braid her hair back, tying it off with a twine cord, and listened.

She tilted her head at Kyle's question. "I suppose so; can't say anything about answering it." A joke? Or not...?

Nyx turned as Ilia called every indoors.

"Mind if we continue this inside?" She took a few small steps back.

➷ Kyle

Kyle nodded, giving his head a quick tilt to invite Nyx to walk beside him as Headmaster Ilia called for the students to come inside for breakfast. His lips pursed, holding his silence for a moment as he thought over how to phrase himself.

"So.. I know you're new here," He snorted then, adding, "Newer than me even, and I only got here a couple weeks ago. But I keep wondering about this whole.. 'bond' thing, with the unhatched wyverns, y'know?" His hand lifted to swipe a lock of hair behind his ear so he could peer over at Nyx from the corner of his eye.

"I mean- does it.. what does it feel like? If anything? Can you, I don't know, sense your wyvern from here already?" Kyle's head turned to face Nyx fully then, brow furrowed in an almost concerned manner. He didn't know a whole lot about the bond between a wyvern and their rider, or really much of what it entailed- beyond the fact it even existed.

Truth be told, he hadn't really had a reason to be terribly concerned with it. Until now, of course. He supposed there was always the Headmasters to ask, as well this was probably one of the more important aspects of being a rider that would be well covered in the soon-to-come classes. Still, he couldn't help but feel curious of what the other students thought of it.

A wave of warmth rushed to his bones as they crossed the threshold into the dining hall, the savory smell of breakfast chasing away the morning chill from outside. His stomach gave a sad grumble in response, and he idly rested a hand over it, breathing in the warm air.

ϟ Neha

Screeching joyfully, she dove as the jet of flame beelined for her snout, narrowly missing it. She spun in the air, pumping and tilting her wings as she shot back up, swooping after Kyrena. She began to climb in the air, soaring higher and higher, and the sound of Kyrena's roar and burst of flame was far below her. The clouds enveloped her up here, droplets of ice clinging to her scales, filling her with energy.

She gave one more mighty flap, before curling her whole body downwards, tucking her legs and wings as close as she could to her body. She rocketed down, farther and faster, breaking through the clouds once more. She hurtled towards Kyrena, spreading her wings ever so slightly and to catch the wind, turning her dive into an angled swoop. The wind below her filled her wings, and she let out a triumphant scream as she darted past the fire wyvern, shooting her wings out fully and giving a mighty flap, soaring over a crag that jutted out.

The rush of adrenaline that courses through her veins was enough to give a grown man a stroke, and yet, she felt more alive than she ever could down there on the ground.

♤ Evangeline ♤

Evangeline frowned slightly when he acknowledged her presence, body tensing once again. Don't talk, don't talk, don't talk.. She told herself, hands tightening on the cup. But.. it'd be rude not to.. She was conflicted, on one hand she wanted to ignore him and never make any friends but on the other she didn't want to be rude. She took a deep breath, shaking her head ever so slightly. "Yes.. my name is Evangeline-" Unfortunately. "It's… it's nice to meet you, Caisin." She didn't think she'd ever be able to tell him that it actually wasn't nice to meet him. She felt uneasy around anyone and everyone foreign to her, and it wasn't even their faults. Of course it wasn't… it was those awful people's faults. Anger and grief rose in her as she thought about her brother, but she immediately pushed it back down.

She took another deep drink of her coffee, continuing to savor the tastes.
