❖ Byxem Arros • Neha

Byx fell silent, allowing Ilia to speak her mind. They knew how she got when she was worried. "I hate to ask," Byx said, frown deepening. "But should we send someone to tell the parents?" They wrung their hands, their cane dangling from their forearm. "With all that's going on, I'm hesitant to tell anyone of what's happening, but they deserve to know." Byx sighed, running their fingers through their slicked-back hair.

"Yes, the eggs." Byx felt their stomach twist. Gods, they hoped these eggs would save them all. The quicker they disposed of the spy and his king, the quicker Draig could go back to peace. They sighed, reaching up to pat Ilia's shoulder in reassurance. "With your permission, Ilia, I think I might take a little break to clear my thoughts," they said, bowing their head curtly. Their chest was positively aching. "Of course, I'll leave Halvor with you so you may fetch me."

~~

Neha let out a sadistic chuckle, not unlike a hyena, with a slightly more static sound to it. She flexed her talons and whipped her tail. Finally, a bit of violence! She snapped her jaw, rattling her raised spikes. I'll tend to the student and Byx, dear sister, you go on ahead, she crackled, lowering her head to the body. She nudged it gently, flipping them onto their side, before leaping into the air and hovering just above the stone. She grabbed the body with her back talons, nodding to Kyrena.

She flapped once, lifting further into the air, before tucking her wings and taking a deep dive. Angling her wings, she aimed for the infirmary, riding the air currents and swinging her tail to help steer. As she made her way to the building, she let out a roar, announcing her presence. She swooped down, flaring her wings to help slow her down, and rumbled affectionately as Byx emerged, their expression rather disgruntled. As they spotted the student in Neha's clutches, their face twisted into one of guilt and pity once more (Neha felt a small stab of them as well, but she pushed it away. She needed to focus on her anger and fuel it). She placed the student down and landed with a thud before stalking past Byx.

Sticking her head into the doorway, she rumbled at Ilia, closing her eyes slowly like a cat. Neha sniffed deeply, catching the scent of the intruder, and peeled her lips back in a snarl.

꧁ Ilia Farra || Kyrena ꧂

The parents. Of course. "I'll send Ida. And Calliope, of course, I doubt they'll want to be separated for long. I don't doubt there will be measures taken to prevent any ravens reaching them." Curled into her own mind, practically burning a hole in the floor as she glared at the stone ground, Ilia almost startled as Byx reached forward. Nodding silently, "Once we have the pyre and all, take whatever break you can before dinner. I think it's best if we're both there, try and fix any misunderstandings..." The clack of his cane moved off and Ilia nodded again, moving forward once more. The ropes around the intruder's arms and legs were tight enough for now, she cut the few ropes holding him up. A crack as he hit the ground and Ilia continued around him, reaching for the journal now with extra notes, and the sword laying on the table.

He didn't deserve anymore than what was coming.

~~

Kyrena watched Neha take off, swinging down towards the infirmary and perching just outside. The platform connecting to the stairs large enough to hold her, leaving enough space for Kyrena to perch there as well. But she needed to sort the pyre, as Ilia asked. Then Neha could decide what happened with the intruder and after that... burning the student's body.

The wyvern launched herself forwards, wings tilting up and she soars into the pink-orange sky before a sharp dive down through the rings. The waterfall sent water careening over her wings, turning to steam and rising into the thick night air. The bottom of the cavern, wings opened as a parachute, and another push to send her soaring through the dark tunnels.

Her eyes adjusted quickly. Carved walls, unused torches, old hearths and various passageways were revealed - a burst of flame to relight the hearths and the tunnels practically glowed with dragon-fire. The dark lit by her own flame, Kyrena slowed her glide, wings wide to catch the air and stop her before the harsh scraping of claws on stone and sparks followed. A room before her, open and wide, filled with age old trees dried over the years. Kyrena let out a low croon, head low before she entered the centuries old cave. The body was small. They'd only need a few trees. Two would be good, broken to make four logs.

There were many rooms similar to this. But only one room where pyres were built and lit. An old tradition, come from those who kept the land before them. Once burned, the ashes were gathered into vases - or just one vase - and the wyverns or riders connected to the passed one would fly them to the hatching areas of the deceased rider's wyvern. Crushed in their claws, the ashes would scatter over the birthplaces, the magic of the bond infusing the eggs and helping them grow, helping them become stronger. Sometimes a wyvern would choose to lay down over their riders ashes and pass there, bones absorbed into the caves and magic into the eggs. Or they'd be burnt themselves, scattered alongside their riders and finally put to rest together.

~~

Ilia stepped forward, crouching on the balls of her toes as she regarded the man. "Perfect time to wake up." she muttered in dark amusement, watching his eyes dart around the room. A hand tried to lift, a small struggle before he went still. Clearly the situation had hit him.

"This is Neha, one of the wyverns you assumed you'd be able to kill." Ilia reached forward, grabbing the collar of his clothes and simply dragging him forwards. The snarling wyvern before them hit the panic section of the man's brain and Ilia looked down to him. "Kyrena says fear smells poisonous. Fitting, for a snake like you." She mused, pulling him forward again. "Neha will be the once to decide how you die. I would say maybe she'd be nice and allow you to choose, electrocution or a game of catch thousands of feet in the air, but I think your options are rather limited." A push and he went stumbling forward.

"Neha, as I'm sure you know, Kyrena is gathering wood for the pyre. Do whatever you wish with him," she gestured to the intruder, "and once you're ready, we can take the student down. Unless you'd rather otherwise?" Ilia offered. Should Neha or Byx wish otherwise then it would happen.

༺ Ida ༻

Ida swung her leg over the saddle, sliding out of the saddle with a small wince. Hours of riding was not kind on her legs. She sighed lightly and began to find the various supplies for both horses and riders.

Passing some extra food to Calliope first, she detached the bit in Aesira's mouth. Ilia had designed the breakaway bridles, a bit easily removable to grant a quick rest without the metal. The nose and browbands would hold the bridle up but now at least Aesira could eat and drink peacefully.

Ida chose a large, relatively flat rock to settle down next to and added the food to the surface. Aesira, noting the preparation for the break, soon settled down as well. Not quite laying or sitting down as her rider did but locking her knees and letting her head droop. No bit, food and water close by and loose girth. What more could she want?

A soft smile at Calliope as Ida finished setting up the small meal. "We don't have far to go and I'm sure that Nikita is preparing an absolute feast for the students that we'll be glad to have but I think we should definitely have something."

═══ *.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.* ═══

「」Nikita「」

The housemistress gave Raymond's shoulder a small pat, a quick thank you and a reminder to keep an eye on the rest of the meal. Moving on over to Kyle, having his own food earlier, Nikita gave him a happy smile. "I do hope it's alright for you love, bit of food before the rest come in. After this, you may as well head down to bed early, hmm? Not much to do that I can't sort out myself." A quick pat of his shoulder and she moved on, out of the dining hall.

Ilia, Byx, and Neha were before her and she ducked her head, hurrying right along. She had no wish to see the one who killed an innocent student, no matter if the three others surrounded him.

The students should all be in their dorms, hopefully taking a second to just take in the day. Across the grass and there, to the door.

Nikita knocked firmly but politely, opening the door to the lounge area and stepping inside. The kitchens here were simple enough, easy to make snacks and all, but the main meals would be in the hall with her own food. No need to make the children worry over making their own food.

"Evening lovelies! Care to come on down? Dinner will be in a bit but I figured y'all may wanna come 'round to the dining hall. Take a half hour or so and meet each other properly." Ilia was lovely but her social skills were lacking and Byx was perhaps even worse. Nikita took a second to glance around and find a chair to sit down on, waiting patiently to see if the students were happy to come down.

{Aybis}

They peered out into the hall. The floor seemed to tilt, the walls to closer for comfort. Just.. Just get down the stairs. It's not that bad; just cramped and trapped and- they shook they're head, auburn hairs waving back into place. I don't the other to see me... Struggle. they inhaled sharply, closing their eyes.

One step forward. Two steps.
They were in the hall.
Three step. Four step.
They were nearly at the stairs. The other students were rustling in their dorms, getting ready. The felt quite self conscious, bolting the rest of the way and thundering down the stairs. It was a relief to be in the far more spacious lounge.

They exhaled, leaning against a stair railing. They looked up, noticing a kind looking woman standing in the entrance of the room. She smiled at them, but Aybis could sense that something was troubling her.

They moved quietly into the center of the room, taking a seat by the window. Now, to wait.

□ ● Calliope Cresthill ○■

Callie frowned slightly as her companion winced, "You okay, love?" She asked, while taking the bit out of Dragonfly's mouth. She didn't feel the soreness currently, but she knew she would after a good nights' sleep. The downsides of sleeping in a good bed after riding. It made you comfy but as soon as you slept in it, bam, pain from the past three years. She took the food from Ida with a word of thanks, placing the food next to the rock just in case and sitting across from the other spy.

The noble smiled as Aesira's head drooped, clearly content for now. Her steed moved to stand next to the mare, nudging her slightly before shaking his mane out and closing his eyes. His lip fluttered as he let out a burst of air, nibbling at the grass tiredly. Calliope nodded, "of course she is. The woman's a saint. I've never met a more motherly woman." She replied, affection lacing her tone. Nikita had always been like a mother to her, in the short amount of time she had known the woman. She had immediately accepted the red-head in with open arms, something no one had ever done for her before besides Ida and the headmasters.

"Right, let's dig in, darling."

♤ Evangeline Avalonia ♤

Evangeline stood as soon as she heard the voice of an older woman, making her way out of her room and noticing Aybis running down the stairs. She frowned, but wrote it off as nothing serious. She jogged down the stairs as fast as she could without falling, dipping her head to the woman and sitting down. The scars on her back were itching extremely bad today, and she knew she shouldn't itch them, but she did it anyway. She sighed in relief, even though she recognized that they were probably bleeding again. Thank the Gods that I never wear white. She thought, smirking to herself.

The girl watched as more of the students filtered into the room, her leg jerking up and down as she watched them. She didn't know why she did it, it was kind of a habit that she'd been doing for so long she just didn't care anymore so she forgot the reason for it.

❖ Byxem Arros • Neha

As Byx walked outside, they were met with a happy hound, who spun around and let out a couple of booming barks. Byx smiled and crouched down, giving his fluffy forehead a big kiss. "Alright Halvor, I need you to stay. Stay, boy." He stood up, holding his hand to Halvor's face. Almost reluctantly, the dog sat, tail still thumping against the ground. They sighed, rubbed their face, and made their way back to the dorms. A nap sounded so incredibly good right about now.

~~

As soon as Ilia threw the man forward, Neha lunged at his leg, her needle-sharp teeth digging into his flesh. He let out a high-pitched squeal, fighting to get loose, but she wasn't fazed in the slightest. She picked him up with ease and turned, shooting open her wings and launching into the air. A guttural scream echoed through the air as she flew higher and higher to play with her food before the sound was ultimately cut off.

꧁ Ilia Farra || Kyrena ꧂

As Neha took the man, soaring away, and as Byx left for a nap - a reminder that they only had another half hour or so before dinner - Ilia turned away from the infirmary herself, picking up the student's body. It was entirely to light for such a heavy situation. The cavern was barely lit but the hearths glowed in the dark and Ilia soon reached the bottom of the cavern. A second to watch the waterfall, mourning for a life barely started, before she continued. A few more steps and she faded into the darkness of the large passageway leading away from the waterfall.

Kyrena turned to her rider, an almost purr escaping her throat. Ilia pressed a soft hand to her nose, walking along her side. The she-wyvern didn't have a saddle but no matter. The spines on her back would keep Ilia supported and it was easy enough to hold on... granted she didn't take off. But not just yet.

The pyre before them was small enough that Ilia could reach over and carefully set the student in the middle. Gathering two smaller vases, she set them to the side. Kyrena grumbled quietly, watching Ilia set everything up.

"You're terribly greedy." The headmaster muttered, returning to the wyvern's side. Kyrena tilted her head, practically pushing Ilia over before she grabbed one of Kyrena's horns, shaking her head before pushing her companion's massive head away with a half laugh. Kyrena settled down, shoulder dropped to let Ilia clamber up, gripping to the scales and spines before she sat, cross legged, on Kyrena's back. A content rumble and Kyrena moved her head to gaze at the entrance of the smaller cave, waiting patiently for Neha and Byx to arrive. Ilia waited for Kyrena to still, book in hand with the soft fire glow washing over her.

Not only did she need to finish writing down what the spy had told her but it was time to sort out the matter of telling the parents.... were they still alive.

═══ *.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.* ═══

「」Nikita「」

Nikita smiled widely, rising to her feet once more as the students all gathered around. "Come along loves, I've got dinner simmering along in the hearths. Have another 20 or so minutes but at least you have a chance to chat and meet each other, hmm? The headmasters are currently sorting out what happened earlier today, they'll be along once everyone's started eating." She explained, checking to see if everyone had heard before moving along, holding the door open.

Once they had all come out of the dorms, Nikita double checked to see if everyone was there before she set off. Neha, far above their heads, could be just seen throwing... something around. "I'm hoping you'll be better behaved than her, she does love to show off." Nikita laughed, completely unaware of just what she was throwing around.

The cavern entrance grew before them, gaping hole in the ground falling into semi darkness - lit by only lamps. Both headmasters were gone, Byx likely to their own dorms and Ilia.... somewhere. No matter.

Leading the way to the platform, she passed the bells and turned her head towards the bright hallway, a large room visible at the end. "Down there is the dining hall. Next to it are kitchens and just here," she paused to gesture at the walls across from them, "is the infirmary! I hope I don't see too many of you in there!" A soft chuckle and she stepped aside, letting the students file past her.

"Now, I'll be just in the kitchen, so if you need me then just yell. Otherwise, find somewhere to sit, make sure you talk to someone. After all, you'll be a team soon enough. Best to know each other at least a little!" Without a last check of everyone, she soon drifted back to the kitchen, confident that they'd all find a place without going too far.

═══ *.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.* ═══

༺ Ida ༻

"Just sore. Hiding away in the castle doesn't leave much chance to get out and ride properly I'm afraid, not posing as the quiet and meek girl they expected." She laughed quietly, picking at the cold but still decent food.

Soon they could move on. Ilia could give them their next assignment and soon they could head off again, away from the wyverns and the students. As glorious as they were, Ida couldn't help but feel rather uncomfortable. The animals of the icy plains of her home, she could kill those. A wyvern? Not at all. It was worrying. She would never try to kill them of course, but the fact she wouldn't be able to hold her own.... that worried her.

Anyway. Food, then to slowly make their way up the trail, back to the academy.

Caisin

Caisin lay sprawled on the bed in his dorm, he had chosen the one at the end of the short hallway, just to the left. It was larger than his room at home but still cozy, and it also happened to have a window that he could peer out of occasionally. He loved listening to all the noises that accompanied the night. He was laying on his belly, studying a detailed picture in one of the navigation books he had picked up from the classroom; eagerly reading the scrawled handwritten notes that spotted the pages. It had taken him just a few moments to get settled, not having brought much stuff from home. Some farewell notes from his parents, spare clothing, various trinkets he had found or collected throughout his childhood, his various hunting gear, and of course his hunting bow. He had carefully wrapped the blackstained bow in a spare blanket, along with a new quiver of arrows, and safely tucked them under the bed.

Having already visited the caverns, and with nothing else planned for the day, he could finally relax and think back on all the past events, and what might come in the future. It was the silence alone with his thoughts that suddenly sparked the guilt he had been forcing down from the first moment he left his home. He tried to reassure himself that everything would be fine, it would work out. They didnt need to know… and he didnt need to tell them yet.
It was just a small lie right? They didnt need to know the specifics, they'd just worry unnecessarily…
Caisin kept trying to justify it to himself in his mind, but the bad feeling still stuck in his gut. Suddenly no longer interested in looking at the map, he let out a depressed sigh before closing the book with a snap, opting to sit cross legged on the bed instead, ruminating on everything. He missed his parents already he realized sullenly.

It was a boom of a door shutting downstairs that lifted him from his thoughts. He could hear someone yelling. From the inflection of the voice, it sounded like they were calling. Maybe he should go downstairs and check if they needed the students again.
Maybe to finish the rest of the tour? That was why they cut it short a little while ago right? They must have just forgotten to prepare a part of it before we got here most likely.
He hurriedly hopped off the bed and quickly ran downstairs. He was expecting to meet one of the three headmasters but was a little surprised to instead see an older lady standing in the hall. Not wanting to seem rude by asking who she was, he instead sat on one of the chairs in the lounge area, watching everyone else from upstairs slowly trickle in. They didn't have to wait long before she announced they'd be heading over to the dining area.
Oh, apparently this isnt the actual kitchen? Maybe its just an extra one.
Caisin thought, confused, shaking his head again, as he seemed to often do. He didnt think too much on it, the mention of food seemed to wake his stomach up, reminding him that he was in fact, very very hungry. Wondering what food they'd be serving, as he followed the lady, he briefly glanced up to see one of the wyvern playing around in the air, gracefully swooping around. Giving another excited grin at seeing a dragon, he hurried off to keep pace with all the others.

They had all gathered in the dining area, this one looking quite a bit more like a proper dining place than the kitchen upstairs. He sat himself at a table closest to the serving area. He spotted the stablehand already here, eating what looked like some type of soup or stew. If what the cook said was right, he had a little while to burn off before the food was actually served, unfortunately for his hungry stomach. He took the time to look at all the other students more closely again. Tapping the table nervously, he figured if he was going to get comfortable here in the school, he better get more familiar with everyone he'd be living with for a good long while. Giving the table one last nervous tap, he stood up.
Who should he talk to? Kyle? No he's busy eating, hes not gonna want to talk. Maybe that girl i saw when i first came in? Or the one with the bird? Oh, I dont know any of their names. He realized, suddenly a little embarrassed.
He eventually picked the one who seemed the most mysterious to him.
Better to get the scariest one out of the way first. Gosh shes so much older than me, will she even want to talk? Well guess its time to find out. He thought as he wrung his hands together to get rid of the anxious energy. Walking up to her, he lightly tapped her shoulder.
"Uh hi, umm I'm Caisin. I, uh, i came here this morning. Your the one with the bird right? I saw you up on the hill earlier today. What's your name?" He asked as he tried to give his best attempt at a non-anxious smile which he no doubt could tell he was already failing at.

☽ Nyx Neri ☾

Both human and bird perked up at the mention of food. Sage cawed loudly, and Nyx allowed her to hop up to her forearm guards. The moment they left the building, Nyx swung her arm out, making the falcon leave off to the mountains. She'd be back soon, no doubt. As the woman talked about the wyvern, Nyx looked up. Neha was up there, seeming to play with something. At first, she dismissed it, but then her gaze sharpened.

It was like Sage, playing with a dazed rabbit.

Was that a body!? Her grip tightened on the book in her hands. She tore her gaze away, noticing she was getting left behind. Once they reached the dining room Nyx sighed. Interact with your fellow students. How hard can that be?

Or she could just avoid them. She had taken one step towards the corner before someone tapped her on the shoulder. Defenses rose in a snap, and she whirled around, fingers reaching for an arrow that was not there. Kids. Just the kid. Her green eyes appraised him. Studied him.

"...Nyx. Yes, the bird" a small sigh at the word, "is my partner, Sage. She's a peregrine falcon." It seemed like a well-rehearsed speech because it was. It was the same thing she told the nobles they performed for. There was more to it. Falconer under Corvus. Honor to perform. Would they ever perform again? It seemed unlikely. "What about you?" A soft tilt of her head accompanied the question.

Caisin

Relieved at the initial ice break and at least hearing her respond rather than brushing him off as he feared, he gave an inward sigh of relief. "Oh a falcon, cool!" He exclaimed. "I sometimes see falcons and eagles on my hunting trips with my dad, but never up close really. I love birds of prey. They're just so fast. Ive always loved the idea of flying!" he beamed, before realizing he might be rambling. "But anyways" He chuckled nervously, shifting around on his feet. "I live with my mom and dad on our farm. Well… used to I guess.. " He grew quiet as his voice died down thinking about them again. "But I bet ill see them again in no time!" Caisin piped up again, trying to dispel any homesickness he was getting.
"Anyways, what type of dragon do you think you might get?" He asked, lighting up at the thought of dragons again.

➷ Kyle

Kyle glanced up from his meal as Nikita drew near, giving a hum of comprehension as she spoke, before she headed off out of the dining hall. He'd exchanged a few words with her every now and then in passing, usually at mealtimes, and he'd determined that she seemed nice enough. He wanted to say the kindly woman reminded him of his mother, but.. that wasn't really true. Nevermind that though- overall he had decided it was best to try and stay on Nikita's good side. After all, the cook was surely the last person one would want to anger.

Some minutes passed, then a hustle of movement sounded from the hallway beyond. He peered over his shoulder as Nikita had returned, escorting the students in through the doorway. He eyed them, faces now more familiar, but was content to leave them to gather amongst themselves. He puffed out a soft sigh, propping up his head by resting his chin in the palm of his hand.

Today hadn't been filled with near as much physical work as days previously, yet still Kyle couldn't help but feel awfully tired. A bit moody, really. He'd done a lot thinking today, maybe that was it.

Now that he'd been given free reign for the rest of the evening, he itched to scurry away, find some crevice to tuck himself away in and work on some wayward hobby. His woodcarving could use some work.. He wasn't much of an artist, but he just enjoyed having something to do with his hands.

Out of the corner of his eye, he idly watched the students as they started to approach one another, starting up some light conversation. The girl with dark hair and an intimidating sort of air, and the tall, blue eyed boy who, Kyle recalled, had seemed to waver when the group had looked over the ledge in the cavern. Hmph, they all really were a curious bunch. He picked at his stew, the bowl almost empty by now. Might as well make his way out soon, but in the meantime, a little eavesdropping never hurt anyone, eh?
